Anyone but me into "Prog Rock"..........you know, the awesome 15 min long songs from the 60's and 70's?

Some of my faves..........early Genesis, Yes, Camel, Caravan, ELP, Harmonium, Gentle Giant, Van Der Graaf Generator.............anyone ?

East of Eden. Mercator Projected album. (Yardbirds meet free jazz).

Lighthouse. Canadian band. Excellent musicianship. Sort of like Chicago, but prog and rocks harder.

Wishbone Ash- Argus. Christian concept album. Wonderfully recorded.

The 3 top rock bands of all time for 15min-plus rock anthems with instrumentalization that no other bands could even attempt to play, much less pull off are as follows, in no particular order.

1. The Grateful Dead

As a former studio musician with credits on several major label albums (RCA, Elektra, Metal Blade, etc.) and movie soundtracks, I know whereof I speak.

That they did what they did while melting on psychedelics only makes their accomplishments all the more amazing. Compositions like Dark Star, St. Stephen, Help on the Way, Stronger Than Dirt (Milkin' the Turkey), and Crazy Fingers (not to mention Terrapin Station... the all-time most amazing rock anthem in music history) set them apart as having accomplished what no other musical group ever had the brains or skill to even attempt, much less excel at.

Period. End of intelligent discussion. Anything beyond this is uninformed hormonal bullsh*t. Sure, there are those who simply don't like the Dead, but that's very different from refusing to acknowledge their uniquely amazing contribution to the world of music.

IIRC, Pink Floyd's "Echoes" tips the clock at 23 minutes. It's the entire second side of Meddle. The band's output through Wish You Were Here could all be classified as prog rock, IMO.

I was never a Dead fan and can name only one of their songs, but about 20 years ago there was a GD concert on public tv and I knew a friend was a HUGE fan to the point that one of the songs played at his wedding was Box of Rain (that’s the one I can name). So I thought I’d do him a favor and record it and watch it myself to broaden my experience base.

I hated it. It was like what I now see at local blues jams.

Maybe a reefer would help.
