The biomass of squids in the world oceans greatly exceeds the biomass of all humans on the earth.

We have fresh yellow fin from the Hudson Canyon tonight...the fisherman who shared his catch with me said in all his years off-shore fishing, he has never seen such large biomasses of squid at night. The tuna were ferociously feasting.

Global warming. Yum!

Back in the 1970’s South Florida was invaded by an alien species of large plant-eating snails from the tropics. The things damaged the landscape of Miami until someone discovered the snails could be eaten and local papers printed recipes.

I have caught these squid while fishing in the Sea of Cortez down in Mexico. They are very aggressive and a pain in the rear when you don't want them eating your hook. When they get them to the boat they try to jet you with water and ink as they flash their colors. Getting inked is fun if is not you. We used them for chum and bait, and ate some of the smaller ones.

While at one camp site we had a school of them come into the bay. You could here the siphons jetting when they entered the shallower water. 100s beached themselves only to dye after squirting their last jet of water.

One spot we camped, a large fishery was based on the squid (rojo diablo). The panga fleet would run out in the middle of the night and return later with their hall of squid hours later. I believe most is sold to Asian markets. One afternoon the several women and the children from the panga camp drove up and parked right next to us, as they are prone to do. They prepared a lunch a calamar ceviche on the tailgate and served us all cups of it. It was delicious.

I have herd that if you want to eat them they should be cleaned ASAP or they can taste foul.
