While at one camp site we had a school of them come into the bay. You could here the siphons jetting when they entered the shallower water. 100s beached themselves only to dye after squirting their last jet of water.
One spot we camped, a large fishery was based on the squid (rojo diablo). The panga fleet would run out in the middle of the night and return later with their hall of squid hours later. I believe most is sold to Asian markets. One afternoon the several women and the children from the panga camp drove up and parked right next to us, as they are prone to do. They prepared a lunch a calamar ceviche on the tailgate and served us all cups of it. It was delicious.
I have herd that if you want to eat them they should be cleaned ASAP or they can taste foul.
