*Meanwhile British bombers, which are now coming from the factories rapidly, have taken to the air over the soil of an ally to show that they can fly as far as Bordeaux and back, or a similar distance in a more northerly direction, between lunch and dinner without half trying.

When AA and fighter cover are introduced into the exercise a little more effort may be required.

Many interesting updates on the world situation just six weeks before the start of World War Two.

By now, Hitler's armies are in full preparation to invade Poland, but most in the west are still quite unclear about what will soon happen.

The British bomber force of 100 planes, for example, a tiny fraction of the many thousands which will eventually swarm over Germany. Hitler apparently unimpressed.

And Chamberlain finally talking tough, but not nearly tough enough to effect Hitler's plans.

And in the US? "Neutrality" is still the strong shield by which our isolationists hope to protect America from another World War. A flimsy shield -- no stronger than a piece of paper, like the one Chamberlain waved in 1938: "peace in our time."

Americans in 1939 sincerely want to stay out of another "foreign war," but they also don't like the idea of Hitler's Nazis dominating Europe. Besides, selling arms to Britain and France is good business, and who could oppose that?

So many Americans are conflicted about it. President Roosevelt, of course, is not. He will do whatever he can to help the allies.
