Bullets versus blades versus zombies (Guns vs. Knives both have their uses)

As a master zombie scholar it is my duty to fulfill the queries of the people, and I am happy to oblige. Mallory “Subsister” Morrow dropped me a line asking which is the superior weapon class for use in a zombie outbreak. An exhaustive number of factors must be taken into account when preparing for any life-threatening situation, and a war with the walking dead is no exception.

First, some people hold to the notion that machine guns and shotguns will dominate when our fair planet is overrun. These pre-dead are notoriously difficult to persuade and must be denied entrance into your group. Tactical and common sense dictate that only light rifles and pistols need apply for a revenant extermination mission. Likewise only Katana-types, proper axes, and machetes should be considered. As post-apocalyptic survival is concerned, the semi-auto rifle and machete are the best in class, so we’ll focus on them.

A good machete is hefty and will not bend. Do not get it from Wal-Mart. The main drawbacks of bladed weapons are proximity and energy. You have to be close and you have to use human power. However, the numerous benefits of a blade make up for these in spades.

You’ve got to think zombie apocalypse, 90% of the human race has been turned into zombies plus how ever many of the recently dead it gets. That’s 5.4 billion zombie world wide, 270 million zombies in America, 22 million zombies in your home state of Texas. And that’s giving a really generous 10% survival rate, most zombie movies and books tend to boil down to 1% or less. And let’s not forget that not all the survivors are going to be good people, New Orleans looters unfortunately have about the same survival odds as you. In other words we’re talking about a very target rich environment, and no more ammo is being made. Eventually you’re going to run out, that’s what life is like behind enemy lines, eventually all supplies run out. Especially if you get stuck going mobile, because now you’ve got the limitation of your carrying capacity.

Guns have to be cleaned. Dirty guns are misfiring guns. And of course that cleaning involves supplies being expended too. Admittedly you don’t expend a lot of supplies, but again no more are being made.

Yes head shots are difficult. It’s a small target and highly mobile. That’s why people are trained to aim for the torso. But torso shots are a waste if it ain’t in the head it ain’t gonna help. And in some ways you do have to Mozambique them, gotta make the brain stop.

Not saying guns will be useless, they do have the advantage of range. But if the enemy is zombies and you’re in an either or situation grab the melee weapon with heft, sword, e-tool, even a bat.

I just checked a few resources and I should be able to handle about 25,000 zombies by myself. Half that if they can run.

The gun range I go to has ample farmland. The lease I have is an old pecan orchard.

After about six months, zombies should start rotting away so they won’t be a problem.

Then there are the looters. Those can run, hide and burn you out if they think it’s worth it.

I’m not going mobile. For the most part, I have everything I need right here.

The real problem would be a foreign country taking advantage of the situation. That could be problematic.

Yes you can get a walmart machete but if you pre-plan, get a Cold Steel machete for only a few dollars more.
I knew vaguely there was a definition of a salamander as something to do with fire spirits but you got the right info.
As for me, I’m going .223 caliber for zombies. Not original but it gets the job done.

Think I’ll shop the net for a good one, instead, then.

.223 works, especially when dispensed from magazines [LOL] but I don’t understand the inefficiency of fire deal.

I’m pretty sure that the zombies were held at bay with fire in “Night of the Living Dead” several times and “Beat ‘em! Burn ‘em!” was the film end’s war cry.

*sigh*

I’ve just not been keeping up with zombie evolution like I should, I reckon....:-\

I’m thinking the Zombies should avoid the Southern half of Indiana entirely. We seem to be more than adequately prepared.

Going to the range today to check out the new laser sights on my .45 and teach my friend how to shoot her Springfield XD-9.

I just made a blade EXACTLY like that out of a large Timken roller bearing from a scrapped bucket loader, though mine has a solid T6 aluminum handle I put on yesterday morning, I took two pieces of flat plate and clamped them over the tang and then wirefed welded the aluminum to make a solid block, I am nwt grinding it down to a handle shape, its for those heavy chopping jobs in the kitchen.

Or frozen zombies from the Alaskan tundra.

That’s a good start. Might even be enough to last until society reboots.

The rot rate of zombies is highly contested. Best to plan for there not being one.

Nobody wants to go mobile, but you never know. One of the big traits of zombies is that they don’t give up, this gives them an ability to stack up into an unstoppable force, they ain’t fast, they ain’t bright but they don’t get tired, or bored, and no matter how many weeks they spend pounding on that barrier they don’t get hurt. That means there’s always the possibility of being overrun (or would it be over shuffled).

Foreign is an issue to, especially in the border states like us. Not only would we have to deal with zombies and looters, but also illegal alien zombies. You know they’ll be just as obsessed with El Norte in death as they were in life.

Something else to buy.

This might be useful for anti-zombie applications. (Except in California. Our zombie and gangbanger protection laws make these illegal in this State.)

I wonder if they’re still good at lawn work.

Remember the truly greatest zombie plan ever:
go to the Winchester, have a pint, and wait for this whole thing to blow over.

Just remember the number one rule:

School Children: [singing] In the brain and not the chest. Head shots are the very best.
