Bullets versus blades versus zombies (Guns vs. Knives both have their uses)
Examiner.com ^ | July 13, 2009 | Ben Anderson

As a master zombie scholar it is my duty to fulfill the queries of the people, and I am happy to oblige. Mallory “Subsister” Morrow dropped me a line asking which is the superior weapon class for use in a zombie outbreak. An exhaustive number of factors must be taken into account when preparing for any life-threatening situation, and a war with the walking dead is no exception.

First, some people hold to the notion that machine guns and shotguns will dominate when our fair planet is overrun. These pre-dead are notoriously difficult to persuade and must be denied entrance into your group. Tactical and common sense dictate that only light rifles and pistols need apply for a revenant extermination mission. Likewise only Katana-types, proper axes, and machetes should be considered. As post-apocalyptic survival is concerned, the semi-auto rifle and machete are the best in class, so we’ll focus on them.

A good machete is hefty and will not bend. Do not get it from Wal-Mart. The main drawbacks of bladed weapons are proximity and energy. You have to be close and you have to use human power. However, the numerous benefits of a blade make up for these in spades.

I prefer slugs or #4 tactical buckshot.

Funny you should mention leaf springs...

The Von Tempsky Bowie is a legendary New Zealand sheath knife, made famous during the Maori Wars of the mid-19th Century. It was/is made from Wagon Spring steel.

They are handmade by Svord in New Zealand -- I've got mine right in front of me. It is perfectly balanced, convex edge (like an ax), razor sharp and beautifully made. The sheath is heavy harness-strap leather -- a formidable weapon in and of itself. It is the finest knife I have ever owned.

Anyone knows that to be properly prepared for the coming zombie apocalypse you need a good mix of bladed weapons, center-fire rifles and handguns...variety is the key!

On several knife making forums where I post I have been reading about this chainsaw and or bicycle chain damascus billet making, also is non-galvanized wire rope thats heated, pulled and twisted tighter to also create a new effect, and now another idea of using mild steel tube filled with ball bearings and misc types of steel brazing rod and its welded at the ends and then hammerforged flat to create not only a strong resilient steel but also with enough of carbides and carbon to make for good edge abilities.

the japanese of course have it down to a religious art with metal folding but there are modern ways and modern materials available that are just lying around or available at a welding shop. I am going to dig into that some more, I am thinking of adding studs like we use in our winter tires up here in Alaska. just ordinary common stuff I have access to.

Until somebody decides its illegal or taxable that is.

Too true.

Yes, you need to train like you fight!

The undead don’t feel the heat. And it takes a long time to actually burn through all the muscles. So you just have FLAMEING zombies coming at you.

I have heard this sort of thing from zombie experts before. They tend to favor .22 for some reason because it was in a book. An melee weapons? Seriously? Over a machine gun? Give me a machine gun AND a melee weapon. No, the flat out best thing for anti zombies is going to be the .223 round. Small enough to carry lots and fast enough to punch through the skull at any angle.

Oh, bloody hell.

And it seemed like such a good idea at the time....:-\

[guns and blades it is, then]

“So you just have FLAMEING zombies coming at you.”

You’ll notice I politely made no references to gay liberals.

You do realize that you are entering into a intellectual disagreement with someone who lives in their Mom’s basement, whose life experiences revolve around DVDs and video games?

FWIW, I’ll stick with Remington 1100 Combat Master.

I’m so personally conspicuous that most people would take little note if I were carrying a flame thrower....;-D

variety is the key!

Exactly! I mean, what if you assumed that they would be slow moving super natural zombies (the kind that shuffle and move even without a head) and only had shotguns and chainsaw. Then when it turns out they are the fast moving recently dead plague virus kind of zombies you are doomed! Got to be prepared for all eventualities.

A .22 generally lacks the force to exit and just ricochets around inside the skull for a while.

Maybe that’s why....:)

Meh. The Zombiclypse is no time to be learning edged CQB arms as well. Yeah, a machete is easier to operate, but if you’re that close to something trying to eat you then you’d darned well better be trained to make each cut really count.

Y’all forgot a very important item from Walmart; good rubber soled sport shoes with good traction. Under no circumstances should one wear high heels.

I like yer flamethrower idea. If you do pack a flamethrower, you might want to add a variation to your screen name as in fire salamander. ;)
