Chiefs QB Cassel signs six-year contract worth over $60 million
NFL.com Wire Reports
The Kansas City Chiefs announced Tuesday that they have signed quarterback Matt Cassel to a multiyear contract.
The Chiefs didn't disclose terms of the deal, but NFL Network's Jason La Canfora, citing a league source, reports that Cassel received a six-year contract worth over $60 million, with $28 million guaranteed. The deal is worth $40.5 million over the first three years, which puts Cassel in the upper echelon of contracts. According to the source, Cassel will earn $15 million in 2009, in accordance with the franchise tender he originally signed with the New England Patriots before he was traded to the Chiefs this offseason.
"We are excited to be able to reach a long-term agreement for Matt Cassel to be a Kansas City Chief for many years to come," Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt said in a statement released by the team. "His proven leadership on and off the field will be a tremendous asset to the organization."
Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli, who also came to Kansas City from New England this offseason, echoed Hunt's sentiments in the statement: "We are happy toannounce that the Chiefs and Matt have entered into a multi-year commitment. Since Matt arrived in Kansas City, he has embraced the team and the community. His work ethic, his ability and competitive presence is what we expect from our players."
The Chiefs obtained Cassel and linebacker Mike Vrabel from the Patriots for a second-round pick in last April's NFL Draft. Cassel led the Patriots to an 11-5 record last year after taking over for Tom Brady, who sustained a season-ending knee injury during the opening game against the Chiefs.
In 15 starts, Cassel, originally a seventh-round pick by the Patriots in the 2005 draft, completed 63.4 percent of his passes for 3,693 yards and 21 touchdowns with 11 interceptions.
Yeah, Joe Montana’s getting on in age...
Everyone on the other team.
Not bad for someone who sat on the bench for his entire college career.
Good for Cassel, and I believe good for the Chiefs.
