Should I just go ahead and download Chrome just in case IE8 goes nuts on me?

Chrome does sound interesting and I’m going to check it out, though I do like Firefox with it’s new security display for https and all it’s plug-in capability.

Also, I have to admit, I fear google. In a way that I never feared Microsoft. Microsoft always struck me as huge, lumbering and somewhat inefficient. There’s something sinister about google.

Agreed - good characterization!

Thats why I use www.clusty.com and avoid using Google tools.

What’s with recent . . . kludgy behavior . . .

cursor frequently freezes and have to either go into sleep mode or force a reboot.

Seems to particularly happen when have more than 3-4 windows open.

Also seems to happen more when the system seems to burp or recycle somehow, if the cursor is in the midst of being moved.

REALLY annoying.

That’s often a sign of hardware problems. Driver problems can cause that as well (particularly graphics drivers).

Thanks.

Hardware was just recently back from major fix/overhaul at Gateway facility.

Will try and insure drivers updated. Sigh.

Thanks big.

Thanks. Hardware was just recently back from major fix/overhaul at Gateway facility.

I am not sure about hardware in this case. It sounds more like something running in the background causing processor overload. Did Gateway install any new software? Does it completely lock up or does it eventually come back?

About 30% of the time, if I don’t try to move the cursor much, it will return.

The rest, locks up.

I’ve assumed that . . . others . . . have stuff on that watches keystrokes or some such but I have good antispyware etc.

Gateway may have installed some locks on 2 extra hard drives designating them only reserve reboot drives. Sigh. Have yet to fix that.

I also use clusty. And I’ve always detested google desktop. It’s like carrying a nanny-state around in your pocket.

If you have a backup plan, good. If you don’t (and your computer is still operational) you might want to get your important documents off. Hard drive failures can look like this as well. This happened to me a few months ago (on a hard drive only about 8 months old). The cursor would stop responding for seconds, minutes, and sometimes until a reboot. This only lasted a few hours before the computer wouldn’t boot. I found out the hard drive was toast the next morning.

It also happened to me back when I was a graduate assistant, and in that case (fortunately) it was only graphics drivers. If yours freezes and always requires a reboot, I would think it’s more likely to be a graphics driver.

Other hardware problems are possible as well, but those are the two things that would seem most likely to me.

Best of luck to you with this.

Thanks tons.

Will likely call Gateway help line, when I get back from family reunion up above Montrose Colo. I have extended service help paid for, for 3 years.

Much appreciate your thoughtful reply.

Software supposedly says drive condition is fine.
