Hardware was just recently back from major fix/overhaul at Gateway facility.
Will try and insure drivers updated. Sigh.

I am not sure about hardware in this case. It sounds more like something running in the background causing processor overload. Did Gateway install any new software? Does it completely lock up or does it eventually come back?
If you have a backup plan, good. If you don’t (and your computer is still operational) you might want to get your important documents off. Hard drive failures can look like this as well. This happened to me a few months ago (on a hard drive only about 8 months old). The cursor would stop responding for seconds, minutes, and sometimes until a reboot. This only lasted a few hours before the computer wouldn’t boot. I found out the hard drive was toast the next morning.
It also happened to me back when I was a graduate assistant, and in that case (fortunately) it was only graphics drivers. If yours freezes and always requires a reboot, I would think it’s more likely to be a graphics driver.
Other hardware problems are possible as well, but those are the two things that would seem most likely to me.
