What is the downside of her publishing pictures of herself with little clothing on a social networking site. Even if it is just friends, or even friends of friends...how far could these pictures go?

One way or another it may be used against her. Maybe, not know but in the future. Who knows! Like all things in life you take your chances.

Once on the net, pics and words are immortal. They WILL turn up if she’s being considered for a job that involves judgment and discretion. I’m speaking as somebody who experienced the phenomenon the hard way in the VERY early years of the web.

“Even if it is just friends, or even friends of friends...how far could these pictures go?”

Is that a serious question?

...oh, and about how far the pictures go...Planet Earth is about the extent as far as we know now, maybe light years from now people will be looking at those photos.

Contrary to many here, I cannot say for certain that the “internet is forever” when it comes to sites lke FB. you usually need to be approved before you can see photos of someone on FB so I do not believe the web crawlers place these pages in the internet archive if this is the case.

The only “advantage” you may have on your side, if you may call it that, is that your daughter’s pictures are probably a few among millions of pictures on Facebook, in total.

Your daughter being singled out because of the pictures, is not very likely, unless some unscrupulous “talent hunting” scouts for nefarious film-making companies use the pictures to help them search the people they want to recruit for their filming activities.

If I had a daughter, I wouldn’t allow her to put up such pictures of herself online. I would also explain to her why it is dangerous.

FB, just like MySpace are difficult to delete when it comes to pics. My GF’s accounts are pretty much locked in and it took a lot of communication with the mods to clean up the pics, but it’s not as bad as the bikini pics.

It’s forever as they say. The silver lining is that your daughter has the same name as another person on the web so they can de denied. Copy, paste, head to properties and paste the link. etc.

I assure you that I am not encouraging her...I am embarressed and ashamed. She no longer lives with me.

You're right that you can't un-ring the bell when it comes to posting photos on the internet. However, it would still be worth it for the girl to take the photos down. I once posted something stupid — not vulgar, just dopey — on the internet and it was up for years...however, it eventually disappeared. It's worth the effort to take photos, etc. down because it slightly decreases the chance they'll be out there forever.

I wouldn’t put a picture of me wearing a snow suit and balaclava on the ‘net. But that’s just me. There’s way too much “information” on the ‘net. Everyone has access to it.

If she looks like Helen Thomas, no problem. Photos will probably be sent back to you.

I certainly wasn’t saying you were encouraging her, I was saying someone else might think you were doing the encouraging...authority types. If she does not live with you, than it is her problem.
