Dear Mrs. Dunavant:

Thank you for contacting me about climate change. As Central Kentucky's advocate in Washington, D.C., your views are extremely important to me, and I appreciate the time you took to share them.

I voted for the American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009, a comprehensive piece of legislation that creates clean jobs, moves us away from our dependence on foreign oil, tackles pollution, and transforms our economy to face the new challenges of the 21st century.

Supporting this bill was not an easy decision. I struggled with this legislation, and I recognize the good points on both sides of the issue. But I believe we have to take this opportunity to fulfill our responsibility to be stewards of God's creation. We must invest in the future of our economy, and we have to act before the crisis gets worse.

Early on, I had concerns about the bill, but I was able to push for significant changes that will impact our state-like additional allowances for utilities to keep our electric rates low and an unprecedented $60-billion-dollar investment in clean coal. The legislation now awaits consideration by the U.S. Senate.

According to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, the cost to the average family could be as much as the cost of one postage stamp per day by the year 2020, and even less for lower-income families. For this price, we can find a way to burn coal more cleanly, we can reduce our foreign oil dependence, and most of all, we can help create a strong, clean, and modern economy.

When I cast this vote, I thought about my children, their future, and the duty all of us have to stewardship. For me, this was a decision that I feel is right and a decision that will, with time, fundamentally change the way our nation and our state produce and use energy, while creating better opportunities for our people. I look forward to seeing more jobs, cleaner industry, and strong economic growth in the Commonwealth.

Again, I value your input on climate change. I hope you will stay in touch, and please feel free to visit http://chandler.house.gov and sign up for my e-newsletter keeping you up to date on issues affecting Central Kentucky in the 111th Congress.

Sincerely,

Ben Chandler Member of Congress
