An animal welfare advisory board to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors is recommending the city ban the veterinary practice of de-clawing cats, except in cases of medical necessity.
The San Francisco Commission of Animal Control and Welfare voted 5-1 Thursday in support of a ban, arguing the practice is cruel and often done simply for cosmetic purposes or to prevent pets from clawing furniture, Commission Chair Sally Stephens said. Stephens said the procedure involves amputating the last bone in a cat's paw and, though doctors use anesthetic, some cats can suffer long-term pain and behavioral changes, such as refusing to use a litter box. "So basically it's kind of barbaric," Stephens said.

“When kids get their eyes clawed out”
Ridiculous.
Your cat was lucky to have dealt with its mutilation, not all fare so well.
This is the most pressing issue of our time folks. We must vote on this bill now without reading it or a disaster of epic proportion awaits us.
“no bone is amputated “
yes, they are
I wanted Dobermans and Mrs. McMonkey McBean wanted kitties. Guess what. We got 3 kitties. 2 torties and a gray tabby. All have their claws. I fear our furniture, curtains, window screens, wall decorations, tablecloths, hanging clothing, and the wife’s nylons, will never be the same again.
I’m still evaluating the kitty cuteness : property damage equation. The one variable missing from my equation was Mrs McMonkey McBean’s fondness for the little wrecking balls.
Grrrr.
One day the Mrs may come home to, “Honey, the kitties ran away, but I made General Tso’s chicken for dinner.”
Why did’t you pull out their front teeth while youre at it? They can still bite you, you know.
The procedure is no different than having your toenails clipped.... if you clip them all the way to the first knuckle. Call a vet, get the facts.
I use a regular nail clipper to take off the very end of their nails, no problem.
The PETA freaks have an agenda that has nothing to do with animal rights. They were protesting at a Veterinary convention in Seattle this week end over a dead fish toss game, but we never heard a word of protest over the fact that Michelle Obama was photographed carrying a $6000 ALLIGATOR clutch.
Just imagine if Sarah Palin had been photographed carrying an alligatior bag.
Meh, they’re fine. Problem was that both of them love getting their back legs involved. After I lost several pairs of jeans from their antics... off they go. The biting I can deal with.
or having a cocker well, cocked
Yummy...sea kittens.....
Oops...wrong thread again....
Oh well, I have two Shepherds, they hate cats, Tom and Jerry style.......
Unfortunately they kill any cats stupid enough to jump in our yard, claws or no claws.
“My opinion is that if you cant enjoy living with a WHOLE animal... then dont get one.”
Ever been around a male intact tom cat?
Or a intact female cat ?(think of tribbles from Star Trek)
thanks! I need those
What’s the big deal? If they ban declawing in the city, cat owners will just take the cat to a vet in a nearby town to have it done.
Oh poor you! I guess you showed them.
I think declawing is inhumane. I have 2 cats, indoor cats. I give them plenty of apporpriate things to scratch and my furniture and other household items are still intact.
Yup, it was pure revenge on my part. Or maybe, they’re my spoiled, overfed pets that couldn’t help but tear up everything they ran over. I guess I should just let them tear up all my stuff because that’s their nature? Or not.
Anything else?
Veterinarian, Dr. Christianne Schelling says..."Declawing is not like a manicure. It is serious surgery. Your cat's claw is not a toenail. It is actually closely adhered to the bone. So closely adhered that to remove the claw, the last bone of your the cat's claw has to be removed. Declawing is actually an amputation of the last joint of your cat's "toes"..."
