Xbit, being a hardware site, only views the industry through the prism of hardware. Their loss.

An amazing FUD screed on everything Apple... claiming all products are "unpopular" and unworthy of the attention the media gives themPING!
Elmer Fudd has better grammar... but I suspect that English is not the native language of the author, so I'll give him a pass on the errors.

Everything Apple FUD Ping!

I have never seen a Linux (smart)phone out in the wild. Plenty of RAZRs or el cheapo Samsung flip phones, quite a number of iPhones and Blackberries, but never a Linux-based phone. Not even a G1. Of course, South Florida isn't the entire globe, which is the perspective this author writes from.
What I find strange is his premise that Apple's global market share is small, but that the American press covers Apple product announcements extensively. Could it be because Apple is increasing its influence in the American market, Mr. Shilov? Sony is very blatant about their copying Apple's aesthetics and computer concepts...

When the article states that 1 BILLION cell phones were bought last year, I had to wonder how many people must be replacing cheaply made cell phones EVERY year.

People all over the world use cellphones. From the perspective of global population, even in just First World nations, nothing extraordinary about that number. But, I believe (in the USA at least) many service vendors offer strategically priced upgrades to encourage people to get a newer model phone each year. Plus, there is replacement due to loss, breakage or failure.

I don’t know about his numbers, and some of his analysis is suspect, but he is right about one thing, and that is the perception of superiority and/or the “coolness” factor. In the movies, the laptops are always Macs. In the real world, they’re usually not.
I believe Apple’s biggest barrier to broader sales is their price point.

That headline has teh stoopid.

Apple does not compete in the “global cellphone market”. they compete in the “smartphone” market. HUGE difference which makes the comparison meaningless.

A lot of the more recent Motorola phones (last 2 years), such as the RAZR2, are Linux based.

I’m aware. I don’t see any RAZR 2s in use locally. Original RAZRs, yes. RAZR 2s, no.

I’m posting this from an iPhone. I’ve had it about a week now and am loving it. My first Mac.
I got the 32gb unit and transfered over 2000 songs to it. It’s an iPod and now that it supports stero Bluetooth, I can use my Motorola S9 headset while working in the yard. Internet in my pocket; AOL radio and I can stream in Rush, when he isn’t on a golf holiday. I can FReep while waiting at the DMV, or the neighborhood watering hole that has free WiFi.
It’s a cool device, the Google Earth app coupled with the GPS is a trip.
Oh yea, it makes and receives phones calls.

Apple does enjoy a cult like following, and I say that as something of a former member of the cult. For decades, Apple fought for gravitas, and now it has achieved it. Being the curmudgeon I am, I now like to bash Apple whenever I have the chance :)
But to keep it honest, Apple might not have a large share of the market, but it has a HUGE part of the "mindshare", and the fact is, even if you have never considered buying an Apple product, the truth is, when you buy a competitors product, it is simply a fact that Apple had a large influece on the design.
I know, Xerox and Palo Alto "invented" windows, but the modern implementation of the desktop interface was largely developed by Apple. Modern touch screen smartphones? Mostly Apple. MP3/media players? Apple.
I hate the Apple fanbois, but I give credit where credit is due.
