When the article states that 1 BILLION cell phones were bought last year, I had to wonder how many people must be replacing cheaply made cell phones EVERY year.
People all over the world use cellphones. From the perspective of global population, even in just First World nations, nothing extraordinary about that number. But, I believe (in the USA at least) many service vendors offer strategically priced upgrades to encourage people to get a newer model phone each year. Plus, there is replacement due to loss, breakage or failure.
