Researchers at the pioneering Northeast England Stem Cell Institute say they have made the breakthrough using stem cells from an embryo. They claim that with some minor changes the sperm could theoretically fertilize an egg to create a child.

Great, looks like the future human can impregnate themselves. And we're concerned about same sex marriages? Its either an evolution thing or the world has gone nuts. The Brave New World in the making?

I know lots of people who should be told to go impregnate themselves.

This is a very creepy use for science. There will be NO father at all. Just a lab experiment as a dad. You really have to wonder what kind of a human being this type of experimentation would produce. Honestly it makes sick to think this is where we are going in the name of science. Sick.

I didn’t even go that far in my thoughts on it but you are right. Technically a woman could impreginate herself if this works by having her own embryonic stem cells used to create the sperm. It is sick.

I’m pretty much convinced that research like this is what will lead to the end of the human race.

This gives new meaning to the term "Inbred".

Besides the moral issues here, the psychical ramifications have to be astronomical.

Now hold on just one rock picken moment here....they used an EMBRYO to create SPERM? Why didn’t they just keep the embryo to begin with? What do they think sperm makes?

Like any other tech out there this can be used for both good and evil, it will end up being used for both purposes.

On the Good side: Men who are infertile due to accident, cancer or other birth defect will now be able to contribute their genes to their offspring. I know someone who had a bad case of the mumps when he was growing up and is now sterile, he was the only male in his family, he now has a chance to carry on his family line and have kids with his wife and not have to use some anonymous sperm donor.

Possibly a future cure for male infertility caused by cancer treatment or disease? While I don’t agree with the destruction of embryos through experimentation for religious/ethical reasons, as someone who dealt with infertility for decades before God blessed our family, I found this quote appalling: “I think that sometimes we have to stop meddling and accept infertility.” You could put ANYTHING in the place of ‘infertility’, i.e. “I think that sometimes we have to stop meddling and accept total paralysis” or “I think that sometimes we have to stop meddling and accept Alzheimer’s disease” or “I think that sometimes we have to stop and accept Muscular Dystrophy in children”— after all these years and all the technological advances in the field of infertility, and there’s STILL bias against people who simply want to have their own biological child. :-( There are MANY infertility treatments that do not require experimentation or destruction of embryos to be successful.

Waiting now for the religious Luddites to hijack this post in 3...2...1...as always, personal attacks will be noted and ignored.
