SOUTH WINDSOR, Conn. (AP) — A Connecticut advertising executive who police say is holding his ex-wife hostage has told a reporter he wants a priest brought in to give the woman her last rites.

Richard Shenkman said in a phone call Tuesday to a reporter with The Day of New London that he will release his ex-wife from his South Windsor home if police meet several demands.

One demand was to provide a priest to give Nancy Tyler her last rites. A priest is at the scene.

Police say the 60-year-old Shenkman kidnapped his ex-wife in Hartford from a parking ramp this morning.

Shenkman's lawyer says his client and the 57-year-old Tyler have shared three years of contentious divorce proceedings. Shenkman is accused of burning down the couple's beach home in 2007.

I have a sneaking suspicion that this is all going to end rather badly.

Why couldn’t he just kill her with an Obama plaque or something?
Now we’re going to hear the gun-grabbers wailing again...

or some such shannigans, shouldn’t be hard to trick the bastard into presenting a clean shot.

My favorite was as a kid there was this guy in town who took hostages in a car dealership. The cops convince him to trade the hostages for a cop - a ‘respectable’ hostage. Perp agrees, but as soon as the cop takes his place inside with the perp, in front of the gigantic plate glass windows - the cop hits the deck flat. Perp is left standing up alone in front of the big windows with a ton of cops drawing a bead on him. And that was that.

I live a mile from this. I probably know the priest, if a local one was called for.

Nice suburban home (value on the order of $350K). Very odd for this town.

Sounds like a job for a Cleric, not a Priest

It should not be too hard to find a solid Novus Ordo priest anywhere in Connecticut. Some would be brave enough to show up. Some auto mechanics might show up and some might not. Human nature.

All three dioceses (Hartford, Bridgeport and Norwich) had Tridentine Masses (at Stamford, Bridgeport, New Haven, Hartford and he Norwich area) authorized by their respective bishops when we left about nine years ago. Connecticut is a relatively small state. I would be very surprised if one of the Tridentine priests would not be willing to show up. It would also appear that the wife is in a LOT more danger from Mr. Middle Class than would be a priest whom he requested for a specific sacramental purpose.

I think that any priest would have reason to be concerned as to Mr. Middle Class's intentions if he asks last rites for himself as well as for his wife. Again, that would signal murder of wife followed by suicide rather than any danger to the priest. It is also entirely possible that Hubby wants the priest's arrival to terrorize the wife into accepting that she is about to die.

How did it turn out?

Prayers up for all involved.

The wife is safe:

SOUTH WINDSOR, Conn. (AP) — Police say a Connecticut woman held hostage for hours by her estranged husband is safe, and police are surrounding the house, which is engulfed in flames.

Gunshots were fired at the South Windsor house shortly after power was cut to the neighborhood and a SWAT team geared up.

Police have been using a bullhorn to tell Richard Shenkman to leave the house because it’s on fire.

Police say Shenkman has claimed the house is booby-trapped with explosives. A bomb squad has been on the scene since the standoff began Tuesday morning.

Authorities say Shenkman abducted Nancy Tyler from a garage after he missed a court hearing. His attorney says the hearing was related to an order that he vacate the suburban Hartford home

I was simply wondering where the idea that he asked for a “traditional” priest (as opposed to Novus Ordo) came from.
