Tell Chamberlain, said Mussolini to the British Ambassador on
July 7, that if England is ready to fight in defence of Poland, Italy will take up arms with her ally, Germany. But behind the scenes his attitude was the opposite. He sought at this time no more than to consolidate his interest in the Mediterranean and North Africa, to cull the fruits of his intervention in Spain, and to digest his Albanian conquest. He did not like being dragged into a European war for Germany to conquer Poland. For all his public boastings, he knew the military and political fragility of Italy better than anyone. He was willing to talk about a war in 1942, if Germany would give him the munitions; but in 1939 no!

PRISONER'S ESCAPE FROM GAOL
DRAMATIC STORY OF ISLAND-WIDE SEARCH
ALLEGED ATTACK ON MOTORIST
GELIGNITE STOLEN FROM QUARRY STORE
CAPTURED AFTER FIGHT ON BEACH WITH POLICE CONSTABLE
After having been at liberty less than 24 hours, a prisoner who escaped from the public prison was recaptured. Every available police officer in the island had been on duty continuously in an island-wide search.
The missing man was Edward Chapman, possessor of several aliases and a record of previous convictions. He was described as a dangerous man and associate of thieves and dangerous characters and an expert in the use of dynamite.
Chapman was arrested at 2 o'clock this afternoon after a stand-up fight with a police constable on the sands at Plemont.
When the prison van arrived a large crowd waidted to catch a glimpse of Chapman. He appeared perfectly composed and looked around with interest at the people, a smile flitting across his face.
Later, the constable of St Helier expressed his warm appreciation of all ranks of the police who had assisted in the most thrilling man-hunt which has taken place in Jersey for some years.

(Apparently singing Oliva Newton John's "Heartattack" is inappropriate in cardiac rehab. Who knew?)

Hollywood Reporter has just released news that New Line Cinema has won the rights to Ben Macintyres book, Agent Zigzag: A True Story of Nazi Espionage, Love, and Betrayal. And, award-winning actor Tom Hanks, will develop it with his producing partner, Gary Goetzman.Planned for release in 2010. Cool.

Most excellent. 2010 he should still be in prison on Jersey, but if memory serves it’s not too much longer that the Germans take the island (the only non colonial British land taken by the Germans in WWII).
