Excuse the vanity post but I just picked up a new Ruger P95 9mm. I figured it was the right time. I'm not a stranger to handguns, carrying the .45 back in the Corps and then transitioning from a wheel gun to the Sig 9 (226 I think...or 228 - one was bigger) when I was a cop...but I left that over a decade ago and I haven't had a handgun since. I am almost ashamed to say, I didn't leave with much memory either...they gave me rounds - I shot rounds - qualified well 4 times a year and life was good.
But now that I have one I am wondering what the best rounds for this Ruger would be; both inexpensive but good rounds to send down range and "impact rounds" to keep in the mags at all other times.
The manual states the pistol is chambered for a 9mm x 19 Parabellum (9mm Luger) cartridge. Well, there ya go! I had no idea there was such an animal. It also says not to load any other 9mm cartridges such as 9mm short, 9mm Steyr, Bergmann, etc.
I guess bottom line, I don't want to look like a geek when at the counter buying rounds. I would rather say "Gimme a few boxes of them and a few boxes of those, thank you very much."
Any guidance from knowledgeable FReepers???
p.s. for those obama/ACORN trolls scrubbing the internet, the above post is hypothetically presented. I would never, ever own a gun...
CAUTION: do NOT buy 9mm Makarov. It’s an entirely different caliber.
Oh, Wolf shoots great, it’s cleaning out the Weapon Fouling Compound (that they paint on the primers and case seats) afterwards that’s a pain in the ass...
I’ve been realizing that the PMC stuff is a hell of a lot better than it’s price would indicate...
It’s my understanding that +P+ rounds are intended for submachine guns. I have a few boxes, but I won’t try them in my pistols, if I had any.
Ping
Which one did you buy?
I like American Eagle. It’s about 13 bucks for 50 rds around here, but I’ll buy just about anything I can get my hands on. It seems 9mm is easier to get lately, than .38 special which is what I am running low on.
Indeed. The formula for kinetic energy is (.5 x mass x velocity squared). Thus, velocity adds far more energy than does mass.
The issue for 9mm ball ammo is transfer of energy. In civilian usage, hollow points solve that problem.
+P+ works fine in most modern 9mm guns, a very common round issued to police is Federal 9BPLE (+P+ JHP). (I just got 50/$17.50, i’m not LEO). some manufacturers will recommend against +P+ due only to warranty liability (glock). decent round if it’s all u can find.
Hydra Shock is an older technology, it has been succeeded by HST (Hydra Shock Two). Good luck finding...
I have tried a number of different brands and have not had a single jam after firing some 500 rounds. If I could find them again, I'd get the inexpensive CCI Blazers with the aluminum cartridge. But as I said, it'll send anything downrange and is a joy to shoot.
BTW, thanks for your service.
SW9VE.
Get the winchester white box 100 round value pack from wal mart. It should be around 21 bucks. The 50 round boxes are around 11 dollars as I remember.
I bought CCI blazer brass case 9mm from walley world for 9.99 per box of 50. It usually comes in 115 gr or 127 gr FMJ 9mm parabellum or 9mm luger. Most of my 9mm practice ammo though is remington 9mm Luger that I got in bulk from cabelas. It comes in a blue and grey box. I think I paid 12.99 for 50.
For self defense, 115 gr, 127 gr or 147 gr hollow point ammo is the way to go.Get ammo from winchester, remington, blazer, cor box or DPX. The DPX +P is what I use in my glock 19 for penetration when Im out in my car.
Ball CAN be used for self defense, but it tends to overpenetrate because the round does not expand. Therefore, try not to use it if you live in an apartment next door to someone else in the next residence.
The ruger is a fine home defense handgun, but please take my word for it and buy extra 15 round mags for this particular model while you can. Theres no telling what Obama will be able to ban if he wins in 2010 and 2012.
A good place to get mags for this particular model is at www.midwayusa.com or at www.cdnninvestments.com
+P+ is fine for glocks, M&Ps and XDs, but stay away from allow framed 9mms because that will wear them out quicker.
Well they may say 9mm Kurz, but if you ask for 9 mil, you'll get 9x19. There is a 9x18, it's a Russian round, with a slightly different diameter, but it's ususally termed 9 mm Makarov.
But, the boxes you want will either 9mm parabellum, 9mm Lugar, or 9x19. It's all the same.
You shouldn't have any trouble finding the defense rounds, but the FMJ "practice" rounds might be a bit harder to find. I didn't pay any attention at Cabella's when I was there a couple of weeks ago, since both my centerfire pistols are .45 ACP, and I'm well stocked in that anyway. I did look at .22 Long Rifle, since I have one each handgun and rifle in that, but there was none, not hollow points, not bare lead, not copper plated. Nada, except a few boxes of Federal .22 shotshells.

That's true, but KE isn't everything. Momentum counts too, and it's mass x velocity.
But that said, look at the muzzle energy of a typical 9mm (355 foot pounds) verses a typical .45. (400 foot pounds) (or even .40 @425 foot pounds) )
If I didn't have .45s, I'd have .40 S&W or .357 Sig. (475 foot pounds).
The P95 is a nice reliable gun. I have one and would trust my life with it. Not the prettiest gun in the world, but it does its job.
FIrst, I would recommend buying Walmart White Box ammo....runs around $20 per 100. FOr defensive rounds, see what works best. I have some HP’s, but have not sent many down range.
Also, it would not be a bad idea to consider buying some extra 15 rd mags even though Ruger’s come with 2 of them. If Obama/Holder get any traction with the AWB2, hi capacity mags like that will be a thing of the past.
Please go back and read Post #42 AND Post #46.
If you want hard to get ammo, you need to read those post.
What is your reasoning on not wielding the
.454 Casull (1,900)
.460 SW (2,400)
.50 AE (1,500)
.500 SW (2,600)
I suspect it is because you don't actually put all your stock in muzzle energy and accept that 100% dead cannot be improved upon. The .45ACP and .40 are great. Someday I'll probably own one, but the 9mm with a HP is quite capable of getting to 100% dead.
