In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
periphrasis \puh-RIFF-ruh-sis\ noun
1: use of a longer phrasing in place of a possible shorter form of expression
2: an instance of periphrasis *
* Indicates the sense illustrated in the example sentence.
Example sentence:
The college English teacher warned her students against padding their essays with periphrases solely to reach the required length.
Did you know?
It's easy enough to point out the origins of "periphrasis": the word was borrowed into English in the early 16th century via Latin from Greek "periphrazein," which in turn comes from the prefix "peri-," meaning "all around," and the verb "phrazein," "to point out." Two common descendants of "phrazein" in English are "phrase" and "paraphrase," the latter of which combines "phrazein" with the prefix "para-," meaning "closely resembling." Another "phrazein" descendant is the less familiar word "holophrasis," meaning "the expression of a complex of ideas in a single word or in a fixed phrase." (The prefix "holo-" can mean "completely.")
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

well it accounts for his inability to ever be considered again for higher office.
I disagree. I think it’s icing on the cake for the left. He would have been unthinkable for office because he’s the big meanie who closed the national parks in 95.
whatever he is to the left, he is a philanderer to the Right, and thus would not get the nomination because of his steamer trunk of baggage much as Rudy didn’t.
All that aside, did I tell you I finally got through “Disposable Heroes” on my Guitar Hero Metallica last night?
That one song had been thwarting me.
wait a minute, you play Guitar Hero?
Got it about a month ago. I think it may very well be the pinnacle of technological development.
Which one, I can’t youtube right now?
And you like Metallica? That’s not what I would have expected.
Until it Sleeps. i am eclectic. ; )
That song is not in the game.

I have that one and the World Tour version. I’m only playing on Medium right now cause it’s fun and the number of buttons used matches the number of non-thumb fingers I have.
looks good. xsboy has GH, but he doesn’t play it all that much.
And you haven’t tried it? It’s addicting. Definitely could be a fun theme for a dinner party. I’m already looking to get another version to get more songs.
i have never played a video game of any sort.
All the periphrasis in the world ain’t gonna explain away this:

Attempting to read the recent Stimulus bill can cause the “heartbreak of periphrasis”...
Some of the things that come out of your mouth are just astonishing.
You’re telling me you never played Pong? Or Tetris?
What about pinball?
nein. ninguno.
