Word For The Day, Wednesday, July 1, 2009 - periphrasis
Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary Word of the Day ^ | 07/01/2009

Posted on 07/01/2009 5:50:17 AM PDT by VRWCmember

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

periphrasis • \puh-RIFF-ruh-sis\ • noun •

1: use of a longer phrasing in place of a possible shorter form of expression
2: an instance of periphrasis *

* Indicates the sense illustrated in the example sentence.

Example sentence:

The college English teacher warned her students against padding their essays with periphrases solely to reach the required length.

Did you know?
It's easy enough to point out the origins of "periphrasis": the word was borrowed into English in the early 16th century via Latin from Greek "periphrazein," which in turn comes from the prefix "peri-," meaning "all around," and the verb "phrazein," "to point out." Two common descendants of "phrazein" in English are "phrase" and "paraphrase," the latter of which combines "phrazein" with the prefix "para-," meaning "closely resembling." Another "phrazein" descendant is the less familiar word "holophrasis," meaning "the expression of a complex of ideas in a single word or in a fixed phrase." (The prefix "holo-" can mean "completely.")

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Jenny Sanford has not evinced anything remotely like a hillary-type attitude towards her husband in this at all. She has been forthright and open about what she told him to do/not do. She’s not papering over this.

Who doesn't remember counting words to get to the required 500 word essays in HS, periphrasis be damned?
My patient is resting comfortably for now, thanks to lortab. His block wore off around 4 am.

Don’t forget the 3 second aaaaannnd he uses in every speech. I find it(and him) very annoying.

Every time I see the words public enemy, it reminds me of that scene from House Party(a really bad movie, but the original) where the neighbor complains about the music being too loud because they’re playing Public Enema.

Good morning, all!

It seems that paraphrasis is the art form du jour
For slimy politicians and creep talking heads spreading maure
They seem to not know that brevity counts
When trying to explain shrinking fiduciary amounts
When our economy is neck deep in the sewer!

Jack.

Good luck to your girls! I hope they have a blast tonight, win or not. It’s a big deal just to still be playing.

I don’t know, I don’t watch tabloid TV. ;-)

I’m just saying, it’s not out of the realm of possibility that a wife might figure playing the wife of the governor is better than being powerless, lonely and bitter.

I’ve only seen the first one all the way through and it was so stupid. Which reminds me, I’m Gonna Get You Sucka is on the free movie channel for only another day or so. How much for jes one rib? I love that scene.

Thanks! Monday they start playing on the all-star team, with a heavy duty practice schedule for a couple weeks.

i think xshub and i rented that years ago and i think we saw more than the first one. i had totally forgotten about it. Kid n Play, Keenan and Kel, all seem so much more wholesome than the current day thugs.

BTW, much has been made of the fact that Jenny Sanford is NOT playing that role of wronged wife, choking back tears and appearing alongside to support the errant politcal husband, a la Silda Spitzer, Gayboy McGreevey’s wife etc.

They are big buddies, have a lot in common, and cope in similar ways, preferring not to whine or wring hands in public.

The only difference is that Sanford was successful on her own before getting married.
