WASHINGTON Mississippi's still king of cellulite, but an ominous tide is rolling toward the Medicare doctors in neighboring Alabama: obese baby boomers.

Way back when I remember a weather man on Jackson TV said:
“I have been waiting 20 years to say this
‘Last night it was two below in Tupelo’
I can’t see or hear Tupelo without thinking about that.
“One obvious solution: end farm subsidies which artificially make fattening foods (high fructose corn syrup, corn-based breading, soybean oil, fatty meats) cheaper than healthy food (fruits, veggies, grass fed meats). Its a simple market distortion”
I couldn’t agree more. I’m certainly no health nut...but it is almost impossible to go for one whole day without eating corn syrup. Many of our ‘foods’ are just different flavors and textures of corn syrup: jelly, mayo, peanut butter, bread, frozen foods, ‘fruit’ drinks, breakfast cereal, some meats...the list is endless.
Don’t forget the other part of the equation: the protectionist sugar tariff. Remember when soda was considered bad for you, because it had sugar in it?...now putting sugar back in would be a massive improvement.
I blame the primary system we have, which puts such an emphasis on Iowa...the corn subsidy is truly insane.
Woohoo!! And they just opened a Dunkin Donuts here in Columbus. Think I’ll go have breakfast to celebrate.
And break it down politically, too and see how many of the obese are O supporters. Don’t work, food and housing free, and just voted themselves a continuance.
1. Mississippi
2. Alabama
3. Michael Moore
LOL...!!! Nice!
Good points
I was born in Houston and still have lots of relatives there.
However, I recently moved from SouthEast Florida (Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, WestPalm Beach), to SouthWest Florida (Fort Myers). And I can tell you that the obesity rate on the west coast of Florida is MUCH higher than on the east coast. Same temperatures, but fatter (and uglier) people. The only difference is that life in SW Florida is more laid back, more rural, if you will, which leads me to my current theory... People in Miami are much more shallow, and actually CARE About how they look, whereas the nice folks out west here, don't really seem to give a crap.
white folks are fatter that all get out now too but Mississippi is the blackest state in the country (40%)
therein lies the bulk of the fat problem and I’m sorry to freeper gals but it’s mostly fat black women
We live down here. We don’t need a study.
yes, there are fat white folks but Mississippi is probably average for fat peckerwoods.
the black population’s women over aged 16 are overwhelmingly fat these days....very fat.
it’s astounding
Michelle is heading for Oprah territory herself.
I lived in NOLA for a while and this statement is very true.
I'd see them in the grocery store and I'd rarely see them purchasing fresh fruit or veggies. It's frozen and junk food mostly. Lots and lots of fatties in NOLA.
Wooly I don’t know how old you are but there is no doubt that America as a whole has a distinctly higher percentage of folks over 25% above their normal bodyweight than ever before not to mention a plethora of folks ...very common amongst blacks and Indian/Indian Latinos whereby folks are over twice their normal bodyweight and beyond
it is amazing how fat we have become (btw, I’m not perfect..6’5”..235...I’d like to be 215-220 or so)
it’s why women’s size 8 today was a 12 in the 60s and 70s...they don’t change the number, they just increase the size
girl’s cup sizes too...average used to be a solid B, now it’s a large C cup...because of all the added weight...big butts, the works
it’s damned crazy
take the black fat rate out of Mississippi and I bet it’s no different than Ohio
there are some pockets of wealth where folks...women in particular work not to be fat...married rich women don’t want to be fat...very risky in many ways
I saw an article once....last year...one of those the media hates printing whereby it claimed around 40% of adult black women were morbidly obese and half those were at least twice their desired bodyweight
Lol. I wonder if being a fattie coincides with being ugly.
it’s about discipline and how important one views one’s appearance.
it’s proper today to alleviate the responsibility clause from why poor people are fatter than better off folks
but I’m 52 and can recall when Mississippi had seriously poor white folks too and both them and blacks in the early 30-45 years ago were thinner than usual
working class whites used to have a leathery sinewy look
folks who are content to live marginal lives professionally are also more likely to just not care too much about being obese, but no doubt cheap junk food does not help
Birmingham, AL: The best pulled pork or beef brisket I had was Jim-N-Nick's (and they have killer homemade mac-n-cheese and biscuits too)
Mississippi: The Shed
Have you eaten at either?
