COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.--If there are two things that drive the folks at the world-famous Cheyenne Mountain complex crazy, it's the widely held public perceptions that, for one, the complex has shut down altogether, and that it is synonymous with NORAD, the North American Aerospace Defense Command.
After visiting as part of my Road Trip 2009 project Friday, I'm here to report that both perceptions are quite incorrect.

Unfortunately, by the early 1980's even Cheyenne Mountain was obsolete: the SS-18 (R-36M) missile equipped with a single 20 MT nuclear warhead had a low enough circular error of probable (about half a mile by the late 1970's) that a low-altitude burst would have collapsed the entire mountain, destroying the complex. That's why SAC had their Looking Glass airborne command posts operational 24 hours a day and built the E-4 airborne command posts that could duplicate all of Cheyenne Mountain's functions.
