The never-ending rain may be wreaking havoc with everyone's weekend plans this summer, but at the White House Garden this week, it was hailed as the reason the crops were so lush and abundant.
As fifth grade students picked 73 pounds of lettuce and 12 pounds of peas, assistant White House Chef Sam Kass noted that the garden had flourished quickly due to the downpours, the Washington Post reported.
Besides the lettuce and peas, the 1,100-suare foot, L-shaped garden has also produced beans, kale, chard, collard greens and herbs, Kass told the paper.
The White House kitchen has been turning the garden's beans into dinner fare every other day and the fresh herbs are used nightly.
Kass also noted that no chemicals were used on the vegetables, and Bo, the family dog, didn't eat any of the plants.
Earlier this week, pupils from Bancroft Elementary School, many of whom had helped First Lady Michelle Obama plant the garden back in April, returned to pick what they'd sown.

She has kids doing all of the field work? Swing low, sweet chariot! That ain’t right...
it should be growing well with all the b******t obozo slings around each day....
Self Reliant/Survivalist ping list
Some flunky is growing that...
No white folks in the garden?? I hate to say it....but the Obama’s are all about “staging”.
The collard greens are racist. And where's the arugula?
It’s kinda amusing. In the south, vegies are practically growing along the highway....Kale in all the malls....
Wonder how many times the 1st Beotch actually pulled weeds, cultivated, fertilized and water that vegetable patch? No way she and her kids took care of that garden...they haven’t been around long enough at the WH to do it.
Shucks and golly gee. A designer outfit and $500+ tennis shoes. And here I am, out in the garden in an old straw hat, cut-offs, an old T-shirt, wore out tennies or sandels and sorely in need of a shower at the end of the day. ;) Yup, I guess it’s true: “The rich are different.” ;)
Frankly, peas and salad greens, while better than nothing, are hardly what I think of when talking about raising vegetables. ;)
It is very easy to have a garden when you have a small army to do all the work for you.
Who is the audience for this magic garden charade, exactly?
Is Michelle going to suggest offering Neighborhood Block Grants to tear up city streets in the urban areas and start planting vegetables?
No thanks given to the expertise of the White House gardener’s. 73 pounds of lettuce?? I dont believe it.
NO KIDDING. The White House groundskeepers apparently are pretty good farmers. This whole thing is such a crock. I planted corn and melons right after our last frost and my crops don’t look near that good. Plus we are not growing for a photo op.
Icould not find any tomatoes on the plot plan. I would have at least planted the vegetables that are the most expensive at the market.
That is part of the plan of bulldozing parts of Detroit and other American cities. Just following Stalin’s plan. Put the out of work peons to work growing crops for the poor out of work city dwellers. Then confiscate all the crops for the rulers. “Hey deal with it, we won. Change.”
You mean you don’t wear a white shirt while gardening?
These are the children deemed unfit to associate with the O children.
Not about to send the prviledged O kids to the same school.
Most likely these kids are from inner city DC sKool that would not be good enough for the Obama children.
Also, ALL pictures of presidents and first ladies are staged. You are not allowed to take pictures at the WHITE HOUSE with the POTUS present(atleast that the way it was when freinds of mine visited Bush).
Figures. That sure worked out well for the "little people" didn't it. :0/
