Its hard to know which is more significant: Apples (AAPL) announcement that it sold more than 1 million units of the new iPhone 3GS last weekend easily exceeding analysts estimates or the fact that the news was accompanied by a quote from CEO Steve Jobs, his first since Apples Jan. 21 quarterly earnings results.
Customers are voting and the iPhone is winning, said Jobs. With over 50,000 applications available from Apples revolutionary App Store, iPhone momentum is stronger than ever.
The same press release announced that six million copies of iPhone 3.0 were downloaded in the first five days after its release last Wednesday.
Earlier Monday several analysts had released their estimates of the 3GSs weekend sales, including
Piper Jaffrays Gene Munster: 750,000 units (see here) Kaufman Bros. Shaw Wu: 600,000 Oppenheimers Yair Reiner: 400,000 500,000 Jobs, who usually gets the first quote in any Apple press release, had been noticeably absent in these releases since his medical leave began. His reappearance or at least the reappearance of words attributed to him two days after the Wall Street Journal reported that he was recovering from liver transplant surgery, may signal the first stage of his return to Apple, scheduled to occur before the end of June.
UPDATE: In an addendum to his Monday morning report to clients, Piper Jaffrays Munster notes that Apples weekend sales not only exceeded both his initial prediction (500,000 units) and his adjusted estimate (750,000), but they matched last years sales despite the fact that the new iPhone launched in just 8 countries vs. 21 countries last year.

I’ll probably upgrade to an iPhone after the 1st.
Apple sold more than 1,000,000 iPhone Friday through Sunday... blowing away the street estimates.
If you want on or off the Mac Ping List, Freepmail me.
I’d like to know if there is a ranking of the most downloaded apps.
The on iPhone App store app shows the Top 25 and the Top 50 apps.
So where do you buy one of these new iPhones (i.e., are they in stock — or back ordered)? ... And can you purchase one without the service contract?
iPhones are cool as heck, pop/exchange email, ftp apps, terminal connections apps, wi-fi, vpn, bluetooth, games, more and more apps, music - jailbreak them and they are even cooler
And Im a windows / linux user
Sent from my iPhone while I’m fishing and reading FR
Awesome!
It's amazing, isn't it...?
Oh well, what on earth is Jon Rubenstein going to do now...? His beloved "iPhone killer" just got STOMPED.
I’d like to hear some FReepers review the iPhone.
I don’t trust anyone else now-a-days.
In other news, Kraft Foods announced weekend record sales of 1 million packets of it’s most famous powdered drink mix, Kool Aid...
Apple Store Online, Apple brick and mortar stores, AT&T Stores... Walmart? Best Buy...
Are they in stock? Apparently at Apple Stores they are... couldn't say about the others.
Yes. You can purchase one without a service contract but it will cost about $400 more... and you can only use it in the US on AT&T or T-Mobile.
I have the first generation iPhone. Best damn phone I've every owned... and not too shabby in the pocket computer department either.
So speaks a person who has not used an iPhone...
Good for Apple.
I can’t get an iPhone as their network, crappy as it is, doesn’t even cover where I live.
I’d be hit with roaming charges from their “partners” in my own house!
Ed
Thanks
I can’t speak for the Iphone, but the Ipod touch is essentially an Iphone without the phone feature. The Ipod touch is one of the best MP3 players I have ever owned and if you have a wi-fi connection you can: get on google earth and view anywhere you wish down to the street level, check the stock market, read the pocket constitution; use it as a graphing calculator, watch movies, look on Forex, check the weather, send emails, play monopoly, use the thesaurus/dictionary on the go(without internet), check the weather(complete with maps). There are almost limitless apps that can be downloaded for the Ipod/Iphone, they even have a free bible. Did I mention it can play music while viewing photos? The Web browser is also surprisingly functional, although I still prefer the LCD home screen.
You said — Steve Jobs is back at Apple after six months medical leave (for whatever reason)...

Ah..., yes.., that liver transplant obviously worked, although that poor fool who lost his liver in that Las Vegas hotel bathtub is still in sad shape, today... :-)
I hate this kind of news...as of right now Im stuck w/ Verizon but really would like (and even need) an iphone So its a blackberry or regular cell and I’m opting for the later until I get ATT service at the house. IIRC wasn’t Verizon offered the iphone first and refused? I think thats the case and makes this sort of news even more maddening. You iphone owners suck and no, I don’t want to see how slick it is. ;)
I tried an iPhone last August for a month (AT&T internal sales push at a company I was contracting with), and I went back to my Samsung i760. It simply works better for me. I just cannot give up the front number pad and the real, tactile keys. The fact I have more functionality than the iPhone - in a smaller, lighter package - is what sold me. And it’s had video recording capability from back in early 2007!
I know several people who tried the iPhone, and ended up going back to their WinMo or Crackberry phones. I know, heresy, there are people who don’t swoon and grovel over the iPhone. How damaging to the iEgos of the iLemmings with their iPhones...;)
Yes, they were.
You iphone owners suck. . .
Yes, we do... (smug look of self-satisfaction beaming from grinning face.)
