Hunter pleads guilty to firing rifle, killing baby in nearby home

MONTICELLO – A Howard Beach man who was hunting in Swan Lake last November when he fired his high powered rifle and killed a baby inside a home, Friday pled guilty to second-degree manslaughter.

Edward Taibi, 45, had been hunting on property off Horseshoe Lake Road when he fired two shots from his rifle within 400 feet of a mobile home where 16-month-old Charley Skala of Woodbourne, and her grandmother were located.

When sentenced in October, he will receive two to eight years in state prison.

The guilty plea came in Sullivan County Court as District Attorney Stephen Lungen was preparing for a trial.

“This was not an accident; this was a recklessly caused death because in the location and manner in which Mr. Taibi fired his high-powered 300 magnum Winchester rifle, he was in such close proximity to the residence, which was in his view at the time of his shooting that he should have never fired any of the shots, let alone the first shot, especially the second shot, which was even closer.”

Lungen termed the resolution “fair.” But said nothing could make the family pleased.

From your NY Post link...

“The bottom line is, a hunter shot through my house,” said the baby’s stricken grandmother, whose eyes were red from crying when she answered the door at her home yesterday.

The hunter, Edward Taibi, 45, a father from Howard Beach, was distraught as well, a pal said.

“Eddie was in tears. He collapsed on the side of my Jeep” when one of the people in the trailer home rushed over to say that someone had been shot, friend Butch Froelich told WABC-TV.

Froelich, whose house sits on a hilly cornfield surrounded by woods where Taibi was hunting, said the hunter had suffered tragedy in his own family - having lost a 13-year-old daughter to cancer.

“I know Eddie would do anything to bring [Charly] back,” Froelich said.

Taibi was charged with second-degree manslaughter and held without bail after his arraignment.

Sorry for that, but this story involves a baby being accidentally shot and killed. It’s hardly the place for humor, even if it’s not directed at the victims.

I guess I responded too quickly. You really do have a sick sense of humor. I thought you were an ok guy before this.

In many situations, I would agree. But, IMO, not something like this.

This guy is a moron. What the hell do you need a 300 win to hunt deer for. A shot gun with sabots are enough. If you are hunting black bear a .223 high grain is enough AND WATCH WHERE YOU ARE SHOOTING. Every year we have some dumb ass either shoot someone or something. I am in central NY and last year two idiots (out of season no less)one shot the other while drivin deer. Once the bullet leaves the chamber ya can’t call it back! Moron

I agree. The guy is an absolute moron for shooting a rifle near where people live, especially a high-powered one. There are probably a lot of morons like him running around out there.

...but, it has nothing to do with how he looks, like some schmuck from California commented earlier.

The catskill area is a pretty secluded area. Lots of hills and forests. I guessing this guy shot at a ridge and never saw the house. A 300 win has a maximum effective range of 1000 yards.

Touched a nerve there, eh

Yeah, because you brought up a lot of shit that hasn't anything to do with anything. What the hell difference does it make if the guy has long sideburns and a chain around his neck.

This was a tragic accident but I am wondering if this trailer was put into the cornfield legally - - did the hunter know that the trailer was there?

I notice the guy is from Howard Beach (Queens NY) and he was hunting in the Swan Lake (Sullivan County) about 120 miles north. This is not surprising. Many of the stupid hunting accidents in upstate NY are due to overly anxious and poorly trained folks from the NY metropoitan area. Shooting their own hunting buddies is not uncommon. Farmers frequently complain about wounded and dead cows, sheep, goats.

Tragedy about the baby.
