Duplicate Post Solution (vanity)
self ^ | June 20, 2009 | eartotheground

I am constantly seeing examples of Freepers getting "flamed" for "duplicate posting". Sermo.com has some sort of filter that automatically checks your post for duplicates. Mods please take note maybe this will help

You work? Where can I get second opinion on that?

Okay....maybe work is too strong a term.....I show up.

Which I have to do every once in awhile seeing as I own the place.

Yeah, that's right ... let's allow an outside agency to place its (spy) software here.

I'm sure, in an 'emergency' we'd have smooth sailing through any gummint crackdown on the internet.

No, really ... I'm SURE of it.

I think a large part of the problem would be eliminated if people (not necessarily you) didn't think they should cut & past the entire headline in the Search field.

Think about it. We have posters who substitute the number "0" for the letter "O" when they type "Obama." We have other posters who do not leave a space between the last word of the headline and the first parenthesis mark they add (never figured that one out, why?). Both are enough to throw off a search.

So if you are about to post a "Bomb Explodes at Shrine" article, do the Title* search under "Shrine," or "Explodes," not the entire headline. *The FR definition of "keyword" is somewhat odd.

Funny you should mention that.

The original or made up headline in the paper read, “Concerns rise after possible anti-illegal immigration killings”

Why they changed it on the web page is beyond me.

I recommend that we modify the zorch so that it synchs with the triplicator and connects to the varhinge.

Then, we just install a thingamajig and it should work just fine.

Wait...what were we talking about again?

It might help if Freerepublic goes back to the old search format that worked OK instead of the only search format worse than one found on Windows Vista’s that we have now.

This new search has a tendency to switch from searching Titles to keywords without you knowing it. Keywords don’t often match the title and sometimes the poster of the original thread doesn’t put any keywords at all.

That can lead to a poster not finding the original thread.

When you fill out the form to post an article, and then hit “post,” the software kicks in and tells you if an article must be excerpted/isn’t allowed ...why can’t the software be programmed to do a word search for the title at that time?

I don’t mind the occasional dup. It helps me not miss the important stuff.

I’m a dedicated FReeper and I spend at least an hour a day scrolling and reading, but I can’t catch everything! lol!

Sometimes I’ll pass by an article. But if I see the same article posted three times by different people, I’ll see if there’s anything there that I was dismissing. Most of the time, if it’s worth a dup, it’s worth reading.

I have posted a couple of vanity postings but never an article. I think I have found a good one, have searched for key words in title and it doesn’t come up. Where do I find the rules about if I can post the full article or just a link based on the name of the newspaper/magazine I am posting from?

Thank you! I will save this. I opted on the side of caution and just did an excerpt with link:-) YAY, I posted my first article.

That search doesn’t work consistently. Give it a try sometime. Pull up a title that you know exists and search each word within that title.

I like to use the entire article if permitted because it gives the full scope of what is being communicated whereas excerpts don’t. I think most people want go to the original and I see a lot of bloggers posting excerpt just to get hits on their rant sites.

Anyway keep looking for articles and post away. It’s easy and I think FR will automatically call for excerpts from many sites that have requested that of Mr. Robinson. If you are in the coastal region of LA stay say as we are approaching hurrican season.

What I do when I click post and nothing happens, is (in a new tab or window) go check the thread (or my pings) and see if it posted.
