Pitbull attacks owner 24 hours after adoption

COEUR D'ALENE -- A pitbull adopted from the Kootenai Humane Society attacked its new owner a day after it was adopted and then got away when police tried to corral the animal.

During the attack the victim, Kip Legaard, called 9-1-1 and when police officers arrived and tried to taser the dog it ran away. Legaard, who lost nearly two pints of blood in the attack is now angry because he had been told by the Humane Society the pit bull could be a family dog.

Kip Legaard adopted the pitbull named Mojo on Friday. He says the humane society told him the dog was nice.

"The lady's like he's so sweet, so sweet, so sweet," Kip said.

On Saturday Kip says that out of nowhere the dog suddenly lunged at him.

"All of a sudden BOOM the dog had my arm," he said. "It felt like someone put my arm in a hydraulic press."

Legaard's arm was bleeding and then the dog attacked again. He managed to free himself and run inside into the bathroom. Bleeding from his wounds Legaard called 9-1-1 and then waited until the dog went downstairs before he bolted from his house into a waiting ambulance.

"The dog followed me out to the ambulance ... the guys are like run, run," he said.

Now, as his wounds heal Legaard still can't believe what happened and he can't believe the Kootenai Humane Society let someone adopt that dog.

"I think they should do way more assessment on the animals behavior before they adopt it out," Kip said.

Eric Hess is the behavioral specialist for the Kootenai Humane Society and he did assess Mojo prior to adoption. Hess says the behavior assessment is 15 pages long and the pitbull passed it.

Before any dog goes out Hess analyzes the dog, how do they act when they're fed, when they're played with, walked, how do they react to children and how do they react to strangers. Mojo passed every scenario Hess threw at him.

"If I wasn't confident in adopting the dog out he wouldn't have passed his behavioral analysis in the beginning," Hess said.

Hess added that Legaard did lie on his application form to adopt the dog. Legaard said he didn't have other dogs in the house when in fact he does. Those other animals, the Humane Society says, could've triggered the attack.

Mojo, meanwhile, remains on the loose.

This adorable little bundle of joy has eaten more leather jackets, DVDs, computer parts and software, audio/video cables and assorted other valuables than I care to think about.

Strange...

...she doesn't LOOK like a Lab.

“Just because YOU don’t think we should have pitbulls, guns, voting rights, etc., that means we shouldn’t have them, right?”

Sure, if someone wants one, let him have it.
The same would be true with a lion, or a cobra, or even a
nuclear bomb.
But as soon as my rights are violated by the animal or device of such a stupid owner, I should be able to EASILY sue him into oblivion and take possession of everything he owns.

I think the Pit Bull needs to be bread out of existence, but if some idiot wants to keep one, it is a free country.

Thanks for posting the links to videos in your comment #51. Those do make the point.

A teenager was mauled by her friend's pit bull in a nearby town yesterday. She was taken to the hospital, and we haven't heard anything about her condition, yet.

I’d a plungered the thing to death! And then of course had to endure the “it was the owner’s/trainer’s fault, why did you have to kill that poor creature” morons.:P

I assume the dog is no longer around. If you ever get another with the same attitude, here is a suggestion for a gift you might get him.

I have a lab. He is a big puss. He does however have a big bark. Thats all I require of a dog. I can protect myself.
In fact, part of the problem here is that people raise animals to be dominant.
NEVER let an animal be the alpha in your home.

Exactly if the dog is there to protect you then clearly he is the leader of the pack. My 2 labs darn well know who is the boss around here.

I’ll tell you what.....

Lets take all Pitbulls... I mean ALL of them. Lets round up every pitbull in the country. Lets invade people’s homes, take away their pets. Even the ones that are 14 years old and belong to an elderly man. Even the ones that have never done anything other than lick someone to death. Lets get them all. Especially the puppies. Lets get all of those family pets and slaughter them. Gas chamber? Burned alive? Ah heck, lets just tie the puppies up and beat them to death. Slaughter the adults because they can fight back.

There, does that make you feel better? You start.

My stupid man-hating, ballbusting (thats another story) sister-in-law would not let my niece come to my house for a while.
After I fussed at my brother to take a stand and stick his foot in that woman’s......... well...... I found out it was because our neighbors had a “pitbull” in a fence.

Stupid! It was a Boxer!

They are banned in Miami.

Interesting. I'm not against people owning these dogs, but the breed needs to be recognized as an exotic animal, and people who own them should have to meet certain strict qualifications for permits. Similar to owning big cats and such.

Fortunately, I don’t have one.

I learned from a couple of neighbors, and several co-workers who do/did have Labs.

If ever there was a breed that needed to be taught how to say, “hold mah beer, and watch this,” it would be the lovable Lab.

Not that my many decades dead Beagle couldn’t give one a run for its money.

Ever have a dog that would open a cabinet under the sink to get the trash can, then gently carry all the eggshells to the front door, and then stomp/roll them into the white carpet? And do it anytime you were more than 30 minutes late getting home from work? He figured 30 minutes was long enough for me to stop & buy him goodies on the way home; anything longer was unconscionable dallying.

He also feigned eating the black Walter Kendall Fives biscuits so that I wouldn’t figure he didn’t want any more of the other flavors. When I moved, I found bunches of them hidden all over the house.

...Oh, yeah; the peacoat buttons. And the epaulets off my dress uniform jacket....

I have had mutts, a Sheltie, and a Maltese. No problems.

Mostly, all my dogs have been mixed breeds, and they were all great dogs. None of them ever did anything like these accounts of pit bull attacks. They certainly never attacked anyone in my family.

Of the pit bulls I've known personally, every one of them exhibited violent, aggressive behavior. Too many stories to tell on that score.

Let us get a couple of things straight. The picture is not Mojo. Mojo is a mixed breed and probably has some pitbull in him. Mojo was NOT supposed to go to a home with other dogs. He is great with people, but not other dogs. Legaard lied and said he had not other dogs when he adopted Mojo.

I know Mojo and he is a sweet dog. I would welcome him in my home if I had a way of keeping him away from my other dogs. He will pay the ultimate price for something that is the fault of an idiot who should not be allowed to own dogs.

I was not there, but I would bet that Legaard was trying to break up a dog fight when he got bit.

I have the one Podengo and four Ibizans.

I could write volumes about what “price” I’ve paid for being late/buying the wrong food/toy/bed/not lavishing them with “adequate affection” when they thought they deserved it and on and on and on....

[oh, how I miss my “I live to serve YOU” Dobermans]

God willing, I will again enjoy the rapturous delight of being owned by a brilliant, obedient, *sane* Doberman.

*sigh*

:)
