Does anyone recall the “naysayers” and the “nattering nabobs of negativity” talking about the iPhone either failing or never going anywhere or never catching on?

LOL...

Someone should keep a list of their names and bring the iPhone up again, to them in the future, if they ever decide to try their hand again, doing their idiotic future forecasts on a new product from Apple... What a bunch of idiots they were...

Can’t thank you enough for posting this, Swordmaker. I bought my iPhone 3G on May 11 and did I feel screwed when I heard about the new 3G S and the price reduction on the 3G.

I’m so relieved to read that there is a remedy for the recent buyers. Don’t know if I’ll get the refund and keep the 3G (which will have to be done today), or if I’ll go for the new 3G S. Probably the latter. Twenty dollars is a small price for the newest gadget.

Wish either of these phones would let me tether.

I bought my 3G back last September, and AT&T was offering me the ‘subsidized’ price of $399, generously with the requirement of a 2 yr contract. Soo, I’m gonna sit this out until they come to their senses because I very much want the 3G S. And I’m guessing they will eventually come to their senses because no one in their right mind is going to pay $399 and up WITH a 2 yr contract.

Many of the features Apple touts in its iPhone 3G S guided tour—including copy and paste functionality, MMS support, the new Voice Memos app, and search capabilities—are part of the iPhone 3.0 software update, which is available to all iPhone owners for free starting this Wednesday, June 17,

This is why I'm keeping my current iPhone 3G and just loading the updated software, which gives most people the most critical new features.

Features like video and gaming available only with the new phone hardware are directed at kids. I'm older and don't need these features.

I'd like to have the compass, but I'm not paying an extra $200-$300 for a compass.

We are recent converts of the 3G and for now, it's sufficient. Previously my wonderful wife was somewhat of a technophobe. Now she emails me regularly and is exploring multiple apps/tools via the IPhone.

It's the simplicity of the interface that has put all of this within reach enough to stir her curiosity. Now she just loves it. I don't think I can put a price on that.

It is still only offered on AT&T, the worst cell phone company for reception and coverage. Get 5 miles outside Denver and coverage ends. I travel to a far corner of Colorado for hunting and AT&T has no coverage. Verizon has continous coverage.

That new iphone takes incredible, high-quality photos (don't know how many mp). I'm shooting with a dslr, which is great, but that would make a wonderful pocket camera and whatever else it has on it to boot.

My granddaughter was here and was showing me hers (we're both camera nuts), and she sent me photos from the Blackberry she had B4 this new one. The quality of those leaves a lot to be desired, and she's taken a photography course and is at least the intermediate level so knows what she is doing. It's not that expensive either but you have to have a contract for the phone service for 2 years I think. I'm not quite ready to jump on it.

She got a small job photographing the office suite of a legal firm, wrote and asked me to recommend a lens. This was with her Canon 40D. I suggested the 17-40L, she got it, said it was the easiest money she ever made, but take off the price of the lens and she about broke even.

Yes, if you bought an iPhone 3G between May 9 and June 19 you can return it for a restocking fee and replace it with an iPhone 3G S.

Hey Swordmaker, this information at the linked article applies only to new iPhone buyers who got an iPhone 3G at an AT&T store. The process for upgrading is a bit different for those of us who went to the Apple Store to get our new iPhones.

I called the Apple store at Briarwood and they said to reserve the new iPhone 3G S at buyiphone.apple.com. (Of course, it was down for maintenance most of the day thanks to AT&T.) Now here's the trick. Check the circle under existing customers to ADD ANOTHER LINE -- don't check the upgrade circle or you'll freak because it'll want to charge you $399 for the new 3G S.

Checking ADD ANOTHER LINE will get you the $199 price (for the 16G iPhone 3G S), and within minutes, you'll get an email confirming that you've reserved a new iPhone.

You'll be able to exchange iPhones on the 19th. Bring the original packaging and accessories. The receipt isn't necessary, but they said it was helpful. They do expect a crowd on the 19th, but they said it shouldn't take longer than an hour and a half.

There is a short window to get the new customer upgrade price, so you have to act fast. As with AT&T, the magic date is May 9th. I made it by a mere two days. The Apple store wasn't sure what the "restocking fee" would be, but they were saying that it was probably in the $20-$30 range. I can't imagine why they'd charge more than the $20 AT&T is charging.

Again, thank you for posting this. But for you, I would have missed it because I was just sick that I hadn't waited and too sick to want to even look at that shiny new iPhone 3G S. This time next week, I'll have one!! And it's thanks to you, Swordmaker.
