Brothers Arrested On Charges Of Selling Drugs; Surveillance Tape Contradicts Police Claims; Investigation Leads To Arrest Of 2 Officers, $10 Million Lawsuit
NEW YORK (AP) ―
When undercover detectives busted Jose and Maximo Colon last year for selling cocaine at a seedy club in Queens, there was a glaring problem: The brothers hadn't done anything wrong.
But proclaiming innocence wasn't going to be good enough. The Dominican immigrants needed proof.
"I sat in the jail and thought ... how could I prove this? What could I do?" Jose, 24, recalled in Spanish during a recent interview.
As he glanced around a holding cell, the answer came to him: Security cameras. Since then, a vindicating video from the club's cameras has spared the brothers a possible prison term, resulted in two officers' arrest and become the basis for a multimillion-dollar lawsuit.

I am normally not lawsuit happy. But in this case I hope they get awarded twice that amount and it comes right from the officers pocket.
A police officer who fabricates a crime against a citizen should be jailed for life.
Same with any corruption by officers.
AND I SUPPORT THE POLICE! MY SON IS ONE!
I'm no lawyer but it seems to me that this could be remedied in about 5 minutes by a county or state judge.
A lot of legal injustices could be easily remedied but often aren’t. Why is this one still out there. Why don’t the dunderheads that took away the licenses give them back without having to wait for a lawsuit or time in court?
I fear that the answer is that in America today, once a stupid decision is made it stands. That’s the end of it. Unless you fight back hard.
Yep.
Daily polygraph exams?
Yep.
I'm in favor of monthly financial audits for cops.
I'm in favor of monthly random cavity searches for cops.
Apart from the usual steps how far is the department required to go to ensure that none of their officers are even guilty of jaywalking or littering?
We ain't talking about jaywalking, Pollyanna. We're talking about perjury, subporning perjury, malfeasance, misfeasance, deprivation of Civil Rights under false color of authority while armed, and mopery with intent to creep.
Not only should these cops be stripped of everything they own, the City should be bankrupted.
Taxpayers are responsible for the Governments they elect.
Exaggerating, but it seems like we get hit with a number of these stories on a DAILY basis.
Chihuahua's, Grandmothers, autistic kids, disabled vets, gun owners exercising their Rights, property owners who just want to be left alone... What else has happened JUST THIS MONTH?
An awful lot of isolated incidents.
As I've said...I have *no* problem with the cops themselves being sued....and charged in criminal court.
...the City should be bankrupted.
Well,I guess I know where I'll find *you* a day or two after the next time you slip and sprain your ankle on a city street.
good post.
So much for the War on Drugs..here we go again.
Well, a big first step would be that police have to agree to no plea bargaining on any crimes they are personally charged with, and maximum sentences--nothing less if found guilty. Plus, they must pay for their own defense. All this in an agreement before they are hired. And lets not forget, full financial restitution to the victims from the officer's personal finances. If he doesn't have enough to pay off, the City must pay the judgement but then must (no choice) actively pursue collection for at least 50 years.
What I see as a real problem is that when charged, the union immediately jumps to their aid, and after months and years of justice delayed, they get a light punishment. No real deterrent for the next guy. Get the union out of it and on the sidelines. Sure, this sounds really draconian, but police have a lot of power and we must have very strong measures to prevent abuse of that power.
Cheap and effective cameras and storage media are doing a better job of enforcing police ethics than internal investigation divisions.
We are coming into a time in society where privacy will be rare and treasured. Most people will understand that nearly all their public actions will be on media of some kind or another. This potentially gives government enormous power.
Funnily enough, this is not a pro-cop argument. It's an anti-spending government money on anything but the essentials argument. I think it's not unreasonable to expect such "audits". I also think that few people would take the job at current salaries with those added requirements. But we could afford to pay that added extra if we weren't subsidizing bastardy, indolence, and addiction.
Unfortunately, some police officers do not take their oath seriously.
35K sounds about right to me.

And were there any drugs in the first place? Just another example of the level of what's called "reporting" in this day.
Now can we end the War on Drugs?
The NYPD are not going to admit to nothing! They’ll brag on ‘em and carry’em high and lie thru their teeth.Their defense will deny everthing...it’s them against exposure and justice.Look here...Cops have an above normal paying job for doing nothing and sitting on their ass.
When they get real bored...they beat up on the enemy...the Public... cause they know they can get by w/it.They are leaches on the taxpayers payroll that fabricate fear to maintain a job.
I’m sick and tired of hearing they put their lives on the line everyday...like their going to the front of the line in a heated military battle.
Clearly defined...they are city tax collectors..if they collect no taxes...they have NO JOB.The majority of cops never use their firearms thru out their whole careers.
They need extra cash?...they sell drugs or steal from the public.
And no. I’ve never been in trouble w/ the law and don’t expect to...I’ve just got a keen eye for dead weight!
