“Back in the days” they used to use stale urine as detergent. Apparently it works a treat.

For saving on soap, I recommend this:

For many years, Colgate’s Octagon Soap has been seen as an underdog among brands of bar soaps. Read here to find out why Octagon Soap is one of the best...for poison ivy treatment, household cleaner, catfish bait and school carving projects.

Well, let’s see. What are the costs. Trips for various ingredients, 2 hours at minimum wage for ....yeah, that ought to be cheaper. What’s so big a deal about simply buying the 20-lb box at wall mart?

Anybody who buys Tide is an idiot IMHO. Tide and the other big national brands are very expensive.
I buy Sun at Walmart for $3-$4 which does 75 loads and doesn’t require me grating and melting soap and other PITA stuff.
The fact is that perfectly good bargain brands will be superior both in real cost and effectiveness to making your own.
Not factoring in your time and effort (and electricity) into making your own soap is not showing the true cost. Additionally commercial detergents contain ingredients that keep dirt suspended in the water so it doesn’t get back on the clothes after being lifted from the garments.

I make my own detergent. When liquid detergent went up to $16.00 the decision was easy. I also gave up fabric softner sheets and use 20 Mule Team Borax along with my detergent. Makes your whites white and your clothes soft. You can also use Borax for other uses around the house.

You wipe out these kinds of threads by saturating them with large pictures. It sure would be nice if you could control your compulsion of posting so many photos no matter what the topic is.
