"And with a breakthrough price of $99, we are thrilled to get iPhone 3G into the hands of even more users who want them."
iPhone 3G S offers incredible speed and performance, on average up to twice as fast as iPhone 3G, so you can render web pages quicker and launch applications faster. iPhone 3G S takes advantage of the OpenGL ES 2.0 standard for stunning high-quality 3D graphics, making mobile gaming and other graphic intense applications better than ever. iPhone 3G S is not only faster, but with longer battery life you can watch more videos, listen to more music, browse the Internet or keep using your favorite apps even longer. The new iPhone 3G S also supports 7.2 Mbps HSDPA for faster networking speeds.***
iPhone 3G S features a new 3 megapixel autofocus camera that takes amazing pictures and video, making it easier than ever to capture, edit and share those moments instantly with family and friends. The new autofocus camera adjusts focus, exposure, color and contrast for the best possible image and includes an automatic macro focus for extra close up shots. With the new "tap to focus" feature, you simply touch the display to select an object or area of interest and the camera automatically re-adjusts focus and exposure. You can record incredible high-quality video clips and edit them right on your iPhone 3G S by simply trimming the start and stop points. With iPhone 3G S you can send photos and video by email or MMS and post them to MobileMe or YouTube with just one tap.
The voice control feature in iPhone 3G S offers hands free operation for both iPhone and iPod functions. Simply speak the appropriate commands into the built-in microphone or headset microphone to dial by name or number. With voice control you can play your favorite music by artist, album or playlist and activate the Genius feature by saying "play more songs like this." You can also tell iPhone to pause the music, play the next track, turn on shuffle or ask, "What's playing right now?"

You can orient yourself to true north or magnetic north, and iPhone's built-in GPS automatically displays the coordinates of your current location. The new built-in digital compass is also integrated within Maps, so it automatically orients any map to the direction you are facing.
iPhone 3G S provides new accessibility features including VoiceOver, a screen reader that speaks what appears on the iPhone 3G S display, enabling visually impaired users to make calls, read email, browse web pages, play music and run applications. The new universal Zoom function magnifies the entire screen, and the White on Black feature reverses the colors on screen to provide higher contrast for people with low vision. iPhone 3G S also supports Mono Audio which combines left and right audio channels so that they can be heard in both earbuds for those with hearing loss in one ear.

That sounds like a plan to me! I’m sure they would do something to keep all that money I’m forking out monthly to them.
You said the iphone supports tethering, I said not in the US, you said they promise ..., I said rumors ...
This is a forum. Folks have discussions/exchanges. That was one.
It does, you did, I didn’t, you did.
Correct, it is not currently supported in the US. Not supported is not prohibited. Do you really think it won’t be?
But you’re happy with your G1, which is why I asked what I did. Not happy with it?
I don’t attempt to predict the future. And I treat rumors of any sort as pretty much worthless. A rumor and a coupla bucks will get you a cup of coffee, and that’s about it.
Yes, very happy with G1 and Android OS. Thought seriously about iphone, but chose the G1 for reasons I mentioned in earlier post in this thread, tethering ability being one of the major reasons.
What is tethering?
In situations where you don't have access to Wifi, using your smartphone that has internet access, as a modem for your laptop to access the internet.
Personally, I just use this feature as an emergency replacement when my broadband access goes down at home, or when I am traveling and want to access the internet with a larger screen than my G1 has, and there is no Wifi signal available.
Because a few abuse tethering, some carriers prohibit tethering and use technical means in the phones to block the ability. AT&T and the iphone in the US is one. T-Mobile and the G1 do not "officially" sanction tethering, but free applications to tether the G1 are widely available, and as long as you don't exceed 10 gig of data a month with your G1, they don't bother you, and even then, they only slow down your access. 10 gig per month is a huge amount of data, BTW.
I tether my iphone to my laptop all the time, works like a champ.
is your iphone hacked?
As best I can recall, I think that Verizon blocks it and prohibits it, which would fit with their general policies of crippling phone features and capabilities, plus I know of cases where they have abruptly canceled accounts where they felt their so-called “unlimited data” had been exceeded. Sprint, I don’t know about. iphone, no.
The G1, yes, plus a couple more Android OS phones are coming to T-Mobile in the coming months, so there will be additional options there. If you want more info for tethering the G1, which would also apply to other upcoming Android phones, I can provide that, but the above is all the info I have for you on other carriers and phones with regard to tethering. Google search the phones and/or carriers you are interested in along with “tethering” and I’m sure some info will pop up in the results.
Im holding out for the iPhone 3G Turbo.
I have an old Motorola E815 on Verizon Wireless. To enable tethering, you just dial DIALUP rapidly, download the drivers, and hook it to your PC with a USB connector. Phone number: #777. Userid: your phone number, no punctuation. Password: VZW. Works OK like a mid-grade DSL. You get billed for minutes of airtime, if you have a grandfathered web browsing plan, as I do. Just don't download gigabytes, and they won't notice. It's handy when you Hotwire into a four-star hotel for $50 for a $350 room, and they want $10 (20% increase!) for WiFi.
Uncertainty about tethering is the only consideration that has kept me from buying an iPhone. But it looks like it's doable, and my contract is expired, so bye bye Verizon!
I just purchased a 3G phone two weeks ago from the local ATT store. Does anyone know if Apple will offer a return for the 3G S for people who recently purchased the old one?
As I recall, AT&T let’s you exchange phones... might be 30 days... or it might only by 14 days. Go to the AT&T store and ask.
You have 30 days to take it back.
$200 tax? How old are you? Its not a tax. You just have to pay for the one you got before you can buy another. The iphone is subsidized. You bought a $500 phone for $200 down with the rest payed for over the duration of your contract. Try buying a car before you have paid for the one you already own. Grow up!
For your information, I am old enough not to be talked to like that by someone moron on the Internet.
Second of all, it’s done frequently in the wireless business. So they subsidize my SECOND iPhone purchase? The first was unsubsidized, the second one was...not my idea to give it to me at the cheaper price, it was theirs. Then you add to the fact that I AM PAYING MORE for the second in the long run (higher monthly data plan, no unlimited texting like the first gen iPhone). Also when you throw in the fact that I’ve been with AT&T since the early 1990s, yes, it is a tax to me.
And again, you don’t know me. So if you wish to continue talking in the future, I’d suggest you find some manners or shut the hell up!
As for me I'm buy the 32GB on the 19th. Have a nice day.
Sorry to disappoint but you are free, for now, to think what you want no matter how asinine it may be. After all, this is the Internet where you can think whatever you want in your myopic little mind.
But hey, if you get off acting like this on the Internet, then please be my guest. But if you’re ever ready to have an adult conversation on this or any other topic, please, let me know. But if all you’re going to do is insult and pretend that you’re some sort of grand Internet know it all, then it’s been “nice” to talk to you.
Oh, and please enjoy your 32GB iPhone. I love mine and will be looking forward to the upgrade at the next WWDC in June of 2010 where they will unveil yet another iPhone. Since I’ve got to wait till March of 2010 or pay a $200 tax for basically an upgraded camera (after all, AT&T will not have the 7+Mbps speed ready any time soon), I think I will wait to upgrade to a 32GB until then. Now my wife on the other hand is a different story...but since I’m only 14 or 15, I guess I can make her wait too.
I buy one every year. So I guess we will both have a new one after WWDC 2010. Have a nice day.
