Ouch. We're guessing this is one that the suits at Best Buy would like to have back. A leaked company memo detailing how the retailer will handle Windows 7 upgrades has accidentally given the world a tasty tidbit to opine upon. The note starts off as such:
"Microsoft is launching Windows 7 in mid-October 2009. This new operating system isn't just a "Vista that works" program - it's a new operating system with improved productivity, functionality and creativity that uses less computer resources."
Never mind the fact that we never knew an OS could posses "improved productivity" -- how about admitting that Vista, in effect, doesn't "work." Moving on, the note also makes clear that any PC sold with Vista Home Premium, Business or Ultimate between June 26th and the Windows 7 launch day (October 22nd) will be eligible for a free upgrade to Win7. Better still, the individual OSes also qualify for the update, and starting on June 26th, Best Buy will begin "pre-selling" the Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade ($49.99) and the Windows 7 Professional Upgrade ($99.99). Have a look at the full letter below, and if you've come here for advice, here's the best we've got: don't buy a PC at Best Buy until June 26th.

Windows 7 is supposed to have XP virtual machine on the higher end versions but probably not the Windows 7 Home and other low end versions.
Has that changed? Microsoft needs to include the XP virtual machine in all versions to avoid another Vista fiasco.
I’m wondering the same thing myself. So far,I haven’t had problems with Vista itself; but have had problems with other programs that didn’t bother to adapt.
I’m running Vista on two systems and they are more reliable and more powerful than any other version of Windows I have run before. The only thing I don’t like is that my flight simulators, designed for Windows, aren’t compatible with Vista.

Vista is not compatible with a lot of good software. This is why Windows 7 on the high end will have XP virtual machine built in. The problem is Microsoft may not put their VM on the lower end versions of Windows 7 which is shooting them sleves in the head again. It will only help Apple if they do that.
It sounds right now like when the release version of 7 comes out, I will effectively have to reinstall it rather than just entering a new activation key. That's all that keeps me from trying it on my laptop as well.
I purchased Vista Ultimate with a 500gbhd this past week and neither works. I purchased it from Tigerdirect/CompUSA, $200 plus, and went back to the store to be told that if I’d bring in the machine he’d give it a cursory (my word) check for ‘nothing’. I assured him that since I’ve been in the mainframe to client/service business for my entire life, I know the machines and the software and this combo is a POS. There are simply no VIA/Microsft drivers for my AMD 64FX Abit processor even though the machine worked like a charm with Windows XP. China or India will come out with an operating system to take on this fraud. MS now threatens to leave the USA because of Zero.
Why do they support Democrats if they don't like paying higher taxes? What rubs me the wrong way is most people are now corporate citizens first, American citizens second, if at all. What ever happened to being an American first, employee second? The new culture of being a citizen of the world, in other words without a country, is against human nature and isn't going to have a happy ending.
Agreed. I run vista on two HP machines with Intel quad core processors and never once had a BSOD.

Exactly how? The vast majority of home users will not see a need for XP Virtualization, this is a calculated fact researched by people who know. If the home user really wants to run a crippled OS in virtualization then they can download VMWare or something similar or purchase Ultimate.

Your processor has nothing to do with it. You should know that, and you should also know that Vista’s 64 Bit was built around AMD’s instruction set, which is one of the reasons why Intel took the bullet and licensed the technology from AMD. You do not need a driver for your CPU in other words.
Also the rudimentary drivers for the rest of the chipset will allow you to boot into the OS to allow you to independently install proper drivers as needed, if they are needed as is the case with every OS ever made(well except OS X which has such a narrow driver list that is easy to include inside the OS all the necessary drivers).
Your issue falls on two places, VIA or user level.
Small businesses needing machines that run old software. I know business owners who are switching to Macs because they can run Xp and older programs on an Apple better than a Windows machine. It is hilarious. MSFT stupidity will continue to benefit Apple and Google. The new Andriod stuff will hurt them more.
Vista is trash. They should put XP virtualization on all versions of Windows 7 including the lower end. People will be happier and MSFT may say themselves from defecting customers.
I am no Apple fan but you can run windows better on a new Mac. Google and Apple are killing MSFT and supposedly the newer Google Andrioid stuff will eat more into MSFT business.

Same here. Unfortunately, Vista wasn't made to be backwards-compatible with programs that were out before it was on the market. That meant that we either needed to upgrade the errant program or remove Vista and buy & install XP.
The other software manufacturers weren't all willing to update their programs either - the version of Intuit's Quicken software that worked fine on my XP machine did not work on Vista. Instead of offering a free patch, it was necessary to buy a newer version of Quicken (complete with all the bloated bells and whistles that I didn't want).
One look at Washington and I'm reluctant to even admit that I'm an American. What with the communist/fascist Kenyan idiot in the White House and a super-majority of useless socialist thugs in the House and Senate, my country is an embarrassment to me.
