Reclusive author J.D. Salinger took legal action today over what he says is a copycat of his seminal work, The Catcher in the Rye, the Associated Press reports. Salinger’s lawyers filed suit in Manhattan federal court to recall the book 60 Years Later, thought to be a Catcher sequel by pseudonymous writer John David California. Salinger’s lawyers maintain that he retains sole rights to the Holden Caulfied character, and that in regards to any sequels, Salinger has “decidedly chosen not to exercise that right.”

"Why?

For the same reason that we're treated to a steady diet of Hollywood sequels and remakes; America's creative community hasn't had an original thought in almost 40 years.

Good for Salinger. They’re *his* characters, and the book isn’t out of copyright yet. I hope the publisher loses his/her shirt on this. They should have known better than to try to steal intellectual rights.

Whoever ripped him off should also be charged with stupidity beyond all bounds. Salinger is 90 years old. In a few more years he could have sold the book on the news of Salinger passing away with little chance of opposition.

In a few more years, the way things are going, there wouldn’t be a market, much less a publisher. :•(

Yes, legendary Catcher in the Rye author J.D. Salinger is still alive, and no, he hasn’t seen a super exclsuive screening of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull…

It will be interesting to see whether the case has a different outcome than the sequel to “Gone with the Wind” written from a so-called “black” or slave perspective called “The Wind Done Gone.” The difference, of course, is that GWTW was politically incorrect and the slave perspective was culturally necessary.

In that case the court reached the bizarre holding that the unauthorized sequel was satire and should be permitted to be published over the objections of the author’s estate.

The New York Times heavily promoted the unauthorized GWTW sequel through multiple articles. However, very few copies were sold nonetheless, if memory serves me correctly.

That should be, “culturally ‘necessary’,” with scare quotes.

America's creative community hasn't had an original thought in almost 40 years.......

------------------

Not even then, 1930s Radio shows 'adapted' to 1950s TV sitcom, etc.

seminal work, The Catcher in the Rye,

Not entertaining to me and that Holden fellow has issues.

Catcher & 2KillAMkngBd was stuffed in our heads. Have avoided teen-drama & Southern Apologetics since.
