U.S. Regional Security Office Kabul released the following report on May 27:
Over the past several weeks there has been an increase in threat reporting for areas around Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan. The reports include threats to the airfield itself and to roads leading to Bagram Airfield. Most of the reporting centers on use of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) vehicle borne IEDs, and suicide bombers. Recently, these threats have been manifested in actual attacks on Coalition Forces:
On May 26, a suicide bomber struck a U.S. armored vehicle in Northern Kapisa province, killing three American troops and three Afghan civilians. On May 20, a military vehicle was traveling on the main route from Kabul toward Bagram Air Field when it hit a roadside bomb, killing a U.S. service member. On March 4, three contractors suffered minor injuries after being attacked by a suicide vehicle-borne IED (SVBIED) outside of Bagram Airfield. The attacker exited the vehicle before detonation, and then proceeded to explode a suicide vest.
Due to an increase in terrorist/insurgent activity and threat reporting, the roads in the vicinity of Bagram Airfield must be considered “high risk” at this time. Overland travel to and from Bagram should be deferred until further notice. Travel from Kabul to Bagram via fixed or rotary aircraft is permissible.
