David Traver of Anchorage took the freestyle beard category and then was crowned overall champion Saturday night in the 2009 World Beard and Moustache Championships.

I started my first one in 1977 on a MED Cruise in the Navy. The Navy allowed them back then. It started as an ugly contest between me and my dad as a joke. We'd see what we looked like when I got back. I cut it off twice a few months in the Navy when I went to the Fire Department and I cut it for a year while in the Guards. My first wife saw me with and without. My second wife as of late 1985 never has. There's a family rumor of pictures of me without one LOL and she saw it.
