Woman mauled by pit bull in Frankford

FRANKFORD - May 24, 2009 (WPVI) -- A woman was mauled by a pit bull inside her home this morning.

Police were called to the 4700 block of Worth Street in Philadelphia's Frankford section just before 4:00.

The 43-year-old homeowner said she had been attacked by her daughter's pit bull and the dog was blocking their escape from the upstairs of the home.

The victim told police the mauling happened when she tried to break up a fight between the pit bull and another dog. She also said the pit bull was under her care because it had bitten one of her daughter's neighbors.

She says her daughter was trying to find the dog a new home.

Pit bulls and puppy mills, while distasteful to some, are the camel’s nose. It’s not going to stop with them.

The issue needs to be brought before the public repeatedly, until they understand.

Yes, that is the way I see it too, any dog can bite. I am not in favor of banning pitt bulls because the pitt abusers would just go to another breed and ruin it. Lions, tigers etc. are not allowed as pets inside the city limits, there is a good reason for it, because they are so powerful. Pitts Dogos, Presas are sometimes almost as powerful as lions and tigers but what to do about them is a problem that I don't have the answer to. It seems a shame that nothing can be done until AFTER a dog maims or kills a person.

With the exception of common usage, or at least what was common usage. I suppose that if something is used in a hyperbolic fashion long enough it changes meanings. I stand corrected.

It hasn’t stopped with them. In Palm Beach County I now have to REGISTER with the county, give permission for them to come into my home at will, and pay $150 plus $75 per intact dog PER year (whether I have a litter or not that year) to breed golden retrievers. And these laws have popped up all over the country. If someone doesn’t manage to take this to court and win, the American people can kiss their ability to buy a purebred dog goodbye, and if PETA and HSUS have their way, they will also lose the ability to have ANY dog.

It is a shame, but it seems like often in these stories, the dog has bitten before. There should be very heavy penalties against the owners, and frankly, I think unprovoked biters should be put to sleep asap.

What a good idea! If you toss enough kids on any dog, you can probably subdue them!
