Why do these fighters have angled vertical stabilizers?

Caption on first and fourth photos are incorrect. Aircraft is an F/A-18F Super Hornet, not a Charlie Hornet.

You’re a jerk. Remind me again why the youngest fighter pilot in WWII deserves to be trashed by garbage like you.

And I think that last one is an 'E' but I am a big rusty on Hornets.

I did not trash him - I said he was wishy washy. I salute his naval service and McCain’s service.
If you want trashing I will trash idiot Senator Juan McCain all day long. McCain’s “service” as a senator has been stabbing Republicans in the back on a regular basis.
Bush 1 is a nice man but he was wishy washy. He cut a deal on higher taxes by the Dems and they screwed him and it was the last straw for some conservatives.
Bush 1’s close friendship with the Clintons is disturbing as well.

BS. He was shot down in the South Pacific and was the only one in his flight group who wasn't beheaded by the Japanese. Reagan seemed to think he was good enough to be his VP and he doesn't deserve to be trashed by the malcontents on a thread paying tribute to his service.
I really am so sick of you dead-enders. It's impossible to believe you're not Democrat scum.

It makes them faster. Thanks, nuff said. I noticed them on our new F-35 and F-22's; didn't realize they were used on non-stealth aircraft. I do see the reduced drag, but would have thought the angle would reduce their effective vertical stability - I guess the aircraft's body is used to 'push against' to compensate for the reduced height.
At first glance, you'd think the angled vertical stabilzers wouldn't work as well as the regular perpendicular vertical stabilizer.

Oh, so you do know the Dems screwed him (George Mitchell to be exact)? Interesting. And yet you think it's okay to throw up negative garbage on a thread paying tribute to his service.
I'm really sorry you're so disturbed by his friendship with Clinton. A man who has done nothing but serve his country for 80 years should spend his final years lacerating his political enemies and making you feel better. I think it says something about his character that he could put aside whatever feelings he had against the man who tried to destroy him during the campaign, and accept his son's mission. It was obvious GW wanted something for his father, but would have been savaged by his enemies so he threw Clinton in the mix knowing they'd never attack their guy. Pretty smart.
Funny how you haters manage to turn every single issue into an excuse to spew.

Woh, what is with the hate? I am glad to see his service honored in this ship. I never said other wise. I stated two well documented facts to answer your question and in return you are giving personal insults. Some people might consider those facts I stated to be compliments of him. I did not offer any option at all. You are jumping from infering my opinion to personal insults. And your are 'backing it up' with some nice facts that have nothing what so ever to do with what I said. Relax, take some breaths and think nice thoughts.

He created the 1989 executive order banning the importation of some semi-automatic rifles setting the ground work for further 2nd amendment abuses. He swore to not raise taxes and then didn't veto a tax hike.
Simply telling the truth about a man who did some otherwise good things is not "trashing" someone. You unwavering blind support of someone that doesn't deserve it is far more like Democrat scum then being (factually) critical.
Reagan was "asked" to accept Bush and did so as a peace offering to country club republicans. That was one of Reagan's mistakes.

Getting them farther a part helps them work better. Also it is not height that makes verticals do their job as much as it is area. Also by leaning out they get into ‘cleaner’ air when the aircraft is doing high angle of attack maneuvers. There are a lot of little benefits.
