Oddly enough, this appears to be the same CD that I used the last time. It's from my school and we have a site license that allows teachers to have a copy on their home computer. I've loaded this twice before (on my old PC and on this one). The last time, this PC had stuff preloaded from Costco, including a trial version of Office 2007. After I reset the factory image, no such freebie, and I'm having trouble.
Any suggestions (other than buying a new computer or operating system) would be appreciated.

What I’d do is uninstall any copies free or otherwise on the system completely and then try reinstalling. You most certainly should not go buy a new PC to remedy this. Maybe buy a personal copy of Office. You can find teacher/student versions for under $200 dollars. If you lived nearby I’d help you out.

Isn’t it looking for a particular file in that cab? That may be the way to get around this situation.

For a workaround, if you need to access documents while you sort this out, would be to download OpenOffice and use that for your immediate needs. It’ll take a little adapting on your part, but certainly not as much as going from Office 03 to Office 07 takes.

Office 2007 trial is conflicting with the Office 2003 install. Are you sure you wiped out Office 2007 completely?

Your school also needs to update ASAP. There are all sorts of potential compatibility problems if you are still using Office 2003.

Are you using Windows XP? With sp2? I think that version of office came out before Windows XP sp2, so perhaps it is looking for something in the older version of WinXP. I have Windows XP Pro with SP2 (haven't gotten around to installing SP3 yet), and I don't have that file (mt561403.cab) on my computer.
I don't have a solution for you, but I believe Office 2003 has two service packs also.
Do you have a Windows XP disk? see if your missing CAB file is on it.
You might want to try doing a custom installation first. (Maybe just install Word and Excel) and see if that will work. Then you can try adding the other stuff you want.

FWIW, I work at a college, and they offer free copies of Office 2007, etc, for instructors. I don't take them up on it, but bought my own copy for the following reason. My college is supported by state funds, AND in Texas, that means the state has the right to search the computer at any time if I install school purchased software on it.
I spent the bucks for Office X years ago, never upgraded. It worked fine until Office 07 started doing the docx stuff.

then installed it into D:\MSO Cache\All Users
It worked!!!"
