Big Brother is watching you via the U.S. Census Bureau shooting GPS coordinates of your doorway

The Decennial Census in 2010 is around the corner, and technology promises to be of great assistance to the process of counting the number of Americans residing in this great nation. Instead of using paper-based lists, surveys, and the like, however, the United States Government has developed a paperless method to achieve their census goals. Efficiency and accuracy are the promised bi-products of these new technology-based programs, which includes creating Global Positioning System (GPS) coordinates for the front doors of American homes. This way, in addition to the current satellite location and picture of your property from the roof, the government will now have a GPS coordinate for your front door.

Well how will they get information from that ridiculous long form. Actually if they would just count “heads” than I like this better. The additional information they ask is not what the intent was at the beginning when the census started IMHO.

If you have a GPS unit such as a TomTom, you can use it to determine the global coordinates of anyone's home. Not only that, there are a number of websites that will do the job for you. For example:

That "additional information" is valuable for both good and bad purposes. They should offer something like a $50 tax rebate to anybody who chooses to fill out the "long form". Otherwise, it should just be "x number of people at this address right now", and then shut the door.

On another forum/site that I’m a mbr of (NOT FR), one of the long-time members reported that his/her father in Alaska has already experienced this.
The first person to ask how many people reside in the house and when answered, reportedly said ‘good, we’ll be back with the REAL CENSUS’. Sounds like a tin-foil hat story but this just happened recently. The neighbors all got together and compared notes and that the ‘census taker’ was supposed to return with a “tag”, and that everyone also noticed the GPS system.

Oh no! GPS! Booga booga! Golly, if the government has the GPS coordinates of my front door, they could get Chloe to look up my address!

But why bother? If they're already standing in the driveway, they can just look at the house number, eh?

Being a genealogist, would at least like to see Name, Age, Place of birth, and parents place of birth. The month and year would be nice too as it was on the 1900 census.

My rural county is switching from RR ‘X’ Box ‘Y’ addresses to street numbers. This is to help with 911 emergency calls(supposedly) in identifying locations when 911 calls are made. The outfit doing this work (this is the second or third firm to attempt this) is using hand-held GPS devices (computers?) made by Harris. They also take digital pictures of the dwelling from the road.

Now if I could only figure out why I find this vaguely disconcerting....?

I live in a state which has well defined Criminal Trespass laws. Signs on property, you ignore, and you don’t have my permission [license] to be here, you don’t leave or you return after being warned, subject to arrest.

I am in the process of denying them “license” in writing to their DC offices and state offices.

If I dial in my home address, my GPS takes me to the first house on the street.

I’m the last house on the street.

Ha!

(Of course, I’ve given it way now...)

I think this started as an attempt to ensure quality. I remember reading somewhere that some of those doing the non-reply follow up simply made up the info on their forms. The theory being that if the census taker has taken the GPS coords of your home they have actually visited it. I do not have a lot of trust in those who Obama wants to be taking the census, thus I too wonder what the real reason for all of this is.

"I do not have a lot of trust in those who Obama wants to be taking the census, thus I too wonder what the real reason for all of this is."

Dittos on the "lack of trust thing." This administration does not engender a feeling of trust in me and I feel sure that they many others feel the same. If anything, they impart a feeling of "mistrust." I'm uncertain of the reason for the global coordinates thing of a given house. I suspect (but do not know for certain) that it is some sort of cockeyed intimidation attempt. And, that attempt will probably succeed with some.

I met one of the people out in the hood about three weeks ago. She was walking the streets with a device in her hands but I didn’t what it was. It may well have been a GPS device. I spoke with her while she was standing under a shade tree punching info into the device. She had a car with a 8X12 inch sign in the read window identfying the vehicle as being that of a census worker. I asked her when the census was to begin and she said she thought in April 09.

Heck they have many different means of marking/identifying ones home now from satellites, 911 numbers, legal property descriptions, etc.
