I forgot about the bears! I hope they stay out of the garden because the fence probably won’t slow them down much. Last year I was letting our very oldest dog out for the last time one night and I was surprised by a big 300lb or so black bear sleeping about 3 feet from the front door!

Maybe. I’m using Sta-Green Moisture Max (or Miracle Gro Moisture Control) soil in the buckets, and in the raised bed for that matter. I’m also spraying with some 3 in 1 stuff from Lowes to guard against insects and disease.

Are you just using plain plastic garden buckets attached to a hanger? I thought about using thos topsy turvey bag-type planters, but they seemed expensive. It seems like a bucket would work as well. What size?

This year is my first attempt at putting in a garden, heck the first time I’ve ever tried to grow anything. So far.... results are mixed. My first batch of seedlings died. I only have about 1/2 of my second batch of seedlings left. I went out and bought some peppers and some tomato plants to just put in the ground. I’m going to be starting some other stuff from seeds in the garden as soon as it is a little less muddy.

We used a 14’ dome for 29 years until it started to collapse last fall and I had to demolish it. It was framed with redwood 2”X2” and plywood hubs (it was a kit) Hail would shred the plastic cover in a hard hail storm so I took my router and a rabbiting bit so I could glaze it with 3/16 glass. I made hub covers with 1/8 Plexiglas circles that I heated in the oven and molded them to seal the hub joints.

One of the big problems with the dome was cooling it without roof vents. We had a fan in and fan out but it still over heated.

For this season we are using a tent like kit to start our seeds but this summer we will buy a aluminum framed glass unit probably 12 X 16

Sounds just like my first year. I started everything by seed and lost quite a few. Whatever survived got planted in two 4x4 raised beds. Don’t give up - you will be rewarded!

Nice tomato selection. I am growing heirlooms as well. I haven’t grown those varieties though. You’ll have to keep us updated with your progress and your favorite tasting ones, so I’ll know what to try next year. I am growing a few zany ones ... pink, purple, striped, etc. It should be fun.

I got a free pack of mixed sweet pepper seeds with my order, so I guess I’ll be surprised by the varieties. My pepper plants are still so small and pitiful looking. I’m hoping I get at least a couple this year.

I planted a couple of bean plants the other day in a pot my landlady was nice enough to let me use. they haven’t come up yet, but it has been raining now here so I haven’t even had to water them. The difficulty in gardening here in FL is finding plants that can take the heat when you plant them this late in the year. got some cantelope seeds too but haven’t put them in the ground yet...was told i had better not plant them in her tomato bed...lol

Oh, I won’t give up! I have a 22 x 36 foot space in full sun. I just went to look and my corn that I planted is starting to peek up. That is good news. .. Later today if it doesn’t rain again, I’m going to go make some mounds for cantelope and watermelon.

I may lose it all, but I’m going to give it one heck of a try!

Your garden area is almost exactly the size of mine (20x36). I do have a watermelon patch in a different part of my yard.

Interesting information, thanks a bunch.

One of the big problems with the dome was cooling it without roof vents.

Why didn't you make a vent? Fitting one or more of the triangles with a triangle-frame on hinges (with a latch stick) would let the heat chimney right out.

By the way, 29 years is pretty good performance!

Yeah I hear you. The heat here in central Ms can be brutal especially in Aug. and into first weeks of Sept. I hope there is a little Global cooling for those months.

Add me to the list. I use the square foot garden method popularized by Mel Bartholomew. This avoids the sand problem it being Florida lettuce has come and gone we ate the main heads of the broccoli last week looking forward to lots of tomatoes and peppers.
