Here's what a card skimmer looks like on an ATM

A lot of you have been asking to see what a skimmer looks like before it's yanked off an ATM. Are they easy to spot or virtually unnoticeable? Our reader Timeus works for a bank and deals with this sort of thing every day, and he sent in the following photos. Enjoy.

TOPICS: Business/Economy; Miscellaneous
KEYWORDS: identitytheft; skimmer
These guys are always one step ahead it seems......

If you see one can you easily remove it? Are these attached at your local bank’s ATM or in some out of the way place ATM?

You can pull it right off. It’s held on with only double sided tape or something similar.

I agree. I like to go to ATMs that you have to use your ATMs to get in the door. It feels safer for many reasons. I wonder if skimmers can be used for those.

I bank with my credit union and my account can be accessed at a grocery store chain near me so it’s pretty safe. The machine is right in front of the food checkers.......

Looks like the mini camera is there to hopefully get your PIN number. How do they get your card number? Another camera?

It’s usually safer to use the ATM inside the bank. They are harder to tamper with but nothing is 100% foolproof. I just had six unauthorized charges from my account the other day. I have no idea how they got my information but they did.

How do they get your card number?

If you scroll down to the bottom pictures you can see the device they put over the bank card reader...It doesn’t take your card and it should.....You can rip this thing off also I have been told.

Debit or credit? Could your charges have been from some store employee getting your number somehow?

Definitely something to be on the lookout for.

Cops should disable the camera and reader, then just stake out the ATM and wait for bad guys to retrieve it. - BUSTED!

They would probably walk up to it and see thier hookups missing and then act like a regular customer.....

Or maybe the bad guys have a way to retrieve the information by wireless...

Yeah....that’s a better possibility. It saves retuning to the scene of the crime. They probably have many duplicate devices ready to go......

They steal as much customer info as they can until the devices are torn off the teller machines.....

The bank is investigating right now but it looks like it was done over the internet. It was something by the name of moneynet.com. They are looking to see if it's connected to the investment company or a money transfer company. I never used either one of them, or even heard of them before this.
