Why some single women just need to shut up
www.cnn.com ^ | 4/28/09 | Wendy Atterberry

In a recent column on the Huffington Post, "Why I'm Single," writer Lea Lane lists all the reasons that she's still single. Why? So she can send the URL to all the nosy, possibly well-meaning busy-bodies who keep asking her why she isn't in a relationship.

Lane presents a persuasive case; it almost made me wish for the days I, too, had the whole bed to myself. She's one of what I'll call the "Happies," women who are perfectly content with their single status.

They don't want for a companion; they love their solitude and have enough friends, hobbies, and passions to keep themselves busy.

Although, most Happies, like Lane, are "open to options, and do understand the beauty and wonder -- and blessing -- of a good relationship," they neither actively seek one nor passively hope and pray one comes their way. The Happies say they don't need a relationship to be content, and, by God, they mean it.

On the other side of the single lady spectrum, you've got the "Crappies." They're the single ladies with really crappy attitudes. Take, for example, Jezebel's Megan Carpentier, who responded to Lane's column with a list of her own, a list that not only doesn't make me a little nostalgic for my single days, it makes me sort of, well, sad -- for her.

I'm sad for the Crappies, because, as much as they say

They apparently had never seen the tongue lashing a pissed off Chinese woman can deliver. I was in Beijing a couple of years ago and watched a woman deliver the most scathing 5 minute screed I can imagine, and I don't even speak Chinese. It sounded like someone ripping apart car bumpers. With the crowd gathered round to watch, you'd have thought there was a jumper. And the poor guy just stood there staring at the ground. Other than that, I love ‘em - especially the ones from the south, more... robust.

Re: Chinese tongue-lashing.

At least I couldn’t understand a word she was saying.

“...its universally understood that American men make the best husbands...”

I don't think that it's that American men make such good husbands, but in a lot of countries they just have more to offer.

True story. I had just finished a research season in Namibia and was having a drink in a popular Windhoek bar the night before I was leaving. Anyway, rather than smoking at the table, I'd get up and go to the standup and smoke. So I strike up this conversation with a really attractive woman standing there, and it turns out she's like the hostess of the Namibian version of the Today Show. We have a few drinks and chat it up and I'm trying to be really cool and she says, “So, how may Namibian women have told you they want to f*** you?” My jaw just drops and I stammer something like, “Well... uh... I've been spending most of my time out in the bush... (swallow) uh, science stuff.” And she looks right at me and takes a drink and says, “Not me, of course, but this country is loaded with women who will do anything to marry an American or European. You don't even have to be good looking.” I slunk back to my table.

You seem to be a well-traveled man for your (young) age.
I know, that you know, that being a man with a honest profession, and moral principals does not go very far anymore in our superficial society.

Not so young, just a shade over the half century mark (but not having kids keeps you young). I gave up on superficial a while back. If you’re honest and friendly, the key then is simply not caring what other people think about you. The hostility is what gets me - life’s too short to spend half your time pissed off.

I can do what your best (girl) friend can do as far as the auto goes. Dancing? Not so much , there is too much metal in my knee. But I'm also old, (51) and conservative, and not much interested in younger men. I work and support myself. I seem to be uninteresting to men of any age. I spent 16 years as the old fashion wife, cooking from scratch, raising a big garden, canning our food, butchering our meat, milking our goats and a cow. All while raising my husband's handicapped child. He had an affair with a younger "career woman" that he worked with.I divorced him. Now I'm a relic. Men my age don't want someone their age and younger men have no appreciation of the old school abilities and values.

We used to have a name for them:

SPINSTERS

The name fits, for good reason.

I’ve heard variations on the theme from many guys in uniform: that the American chicks are spoiled bitchy animals compared to the foreign ladies.

Even the difference between Puerto Ricans and the so-called “New-Yor-Ricans”. The Caribbean island girls haven’t been corrupted the way the ones from LonGisland have.

Thanks for the ping Randall.. Lots of reasons why many of us are single..

Wonder if those with the thread’s gist issues ever recognize their faults? Normally it is everyone else’s fault? Some (of both sexes) say too much, many much too little, many the “inappropriate”, many the “I, me, my” discussions always.

Most of the really great, seemingly perfect men are taken! (or aloof enough to be extremely selective) and I am sure this is what men experience when noting single women.

11. What is a man’s idea of helping you with housework? Lifting his legs so you can vacuum.

Some of these are real funny. A guy should be able to laugh at himself and I am sure many of these will ring true to those reading, although they may not want to admit it to themselves. BTW, when mi' lovely bride of 19 years works every other Saturday. I vacuum, clean the floors, dishes, bathrooms, bedrooms...and even make dinner, at least I try to on those days. There is no reason not to help her out where and when I can. I suppose I could take the "macho" approach....but, I know she appreciates the help. I guess that is why she never gives me a hard tome when I want to go out with a few of the guys for a beer on a Saturday night. You reap what you sow.

The women of the Philippines are the only thing holding that country together....the men are too busy drinking and betting at the cock fights.

I just laughed so hard my coffee I'm drinking spit out thru my nose....

I’ve got a great marriage now, but I had a cr@ppy one first time around.

I’d rather be alone and happy than married and miserable.

BUT... so many women I’ve seen don’t understand TRUE misery; drug abuse, infidelity, verbal or physical abuse.

Their definition of being ‘miserable’ is that their every ‘want’ isn’t met immediately as it appears, LOL!

Stupid, selfish women make the rest of us look bad as a gender.
