Is globalism and "free trade" what's destroying the GOP? (America-first vanity)

Posted on 05/09/2009 12:47:21 PM PDT by Cringing Negativism Network

Yesterday I happened upon a post by a fellow FReeper. In retrospect, I am sorry for responding rudely to their post - and I hope they happen upon this apology.

The post was presenting their heartfelt opinion that American industry and our system itself must be allowed to come apart so that something better can replace it.

It was a Rand-ian position. The system is becoming oppressive, therefore we must weaken it.

To run from it.

No, I was thinking that was from my post #45, that you’ve forgotten again.

In post 509 - I'm thinking personal budget. You should see how we beat up deadbeats that don't pay off their credit cards every month around here. lol

But .gov needs to get down to earth and not run huge deficits which are financed by China - Japan.

All of which reminds me of a certain mining town, now gone bust for many years. The (silver) lodes/ore bodies were discovered by Mexicans, who being familiar with similar ore bodies in Mexico, ran small operations and made a decent living.

Their silver was shipped to Los Angeles, then forwarded to the US Mint in San Franciso (CA)

Soon enough, one sharp operator set up a little trading post and advanced them supplies and the things needed for an on-going operation and the good life. Eventually, the Mexican chaps were over their heads and lost everything, to the store owner.

I believe this nation is at that point. We shipped a S/L of jobs overseas, but yet we want to continue the good life by borrowing - both as individuals and the government we elect.

Remember, most folks are capitalist when things are going up, but soon turn to socialism when things go down. (Borrowed that from another FReeper)

(Now let's see if Mojave knows the mining town I'm referring to)

You’re the expert (unless you’re still gearing up to answer my #582).

By your standard, if Reagan was a protectionist because he placed tariffs on Japanese motorcycles, then what is he because he signed a free trade agreement with Canada?

Why, he must be a hypocrite! ;)

I don't remember using that label against Ronald Reagan.

But thanks for yet another dishonest post.

Mojave,

You posted:

If you wish to discuss where he was Governor, that's fine. But I take it you will admit your error here and correct/amend your statement?

By the way, still waiting to see if you'll either identify where I stated what you claim I stated in posts 528 and 534, or issue an apology and continue.

You can tell a lot about the integrity of a person by how they address their own shortcomings...

Nope. #408.

It's gotta be hard to remember all of your smears against Ronald Reagan. And just in this thread alone.

In a personal matter, a trade deficit may be an issue, it depends upon what you have.

For example, in terms of a durable goods trade deficit - like measured by the US Government - I have a personal MASSIVE trade deficit! I produce nothing; I am an engineer and consultant.

Yet I have a very good income, and consume quite a bit of durable goods, and each month my savings balance increases.

But I am 100% in agreement - Government needs to STOP it’s insane deficit spending; that is the source of the destruction of this nation!

I don't remember saying where Ronald Reagan was born. And the Reagan hater doesn't know where I was born.

But thanks for another dishonest post.

Did I ascribe those words to you? Or are you simply projecting yet again?

It's like having a conversation with a wall. I have argued that Reagan was a free-trader up and down this thread. I never disputed that Reagan placed tariffs on motorcycles, or quotas on autos.

Yet the latter proves Reagan was a protectionist, but I can't even get anyone to acknowledge the trade agreement with Canada, the trade negotiations with Mexico . . . and don't get me started on the Uruguay Round and the WTO. No one has the balls to discuss them.

I should. I confess that I don't. Was it somewhere in Mojave desert? Maybe Mojave itself?

One thing is certain: all it would take is me to ask where you were born, and that would ensure that no one will ever find out.

Please point out where I lied

Don't give me that innocent act. Check out your post that I responded to, or a previous post where you restated TPs question"

"What is your position on average tariffs when Reagan entered office and when he left office? After 2 terms, were they higher or lower?"
You claimed in the first case:
[mojave] "never answered that question."
and then got more condescending, claiming:
"Mojave - not knowing the answer, and apparently too insecure to state as much - answered a different question"

Mojave had already responded quite clearly to the original post

"I don't know what the figures were for 1988."

If you don't know the numbers, how can one possibly say whether they are higher or lower?

You continuing to claim that he did not answer is a blatant lie, in my book.

I have a personal MASSIVE trade deficit

I don't see it that way. You are solvent, your income is greater than your outgo.

Obviously, you are producing goods or services which generates an income.

The mere fact that both Japan and China hold huge amounts of our debt, both .gov and private is: We're buying 'stuff' at a greater rate than we are selling 'stuff'.

We cannot sustain this.

The first issue is we have unemployed people who would like to continue eating and having a roof over their heads - ergo - they voted for the Messiah who promised same.
