Is globalism and "free trade" what's destroying the GOP? (America-first vanity)

Posted on 05/09/2009 12:47:21 PM PDT by Cringing Negativism Network

Yesterday I happened upon a post by a fellow FReeper. In retrospect, I am sorry for responding rudely to their post - and I hope they happen upon this apology.

The post was presenting their heartfelt opinion that American industry and our system itself must be allowed to come apart so that something better can replace it.

It was a Rand-ian position. The system is becoming oppressive, therefore we must weaken it.

What average tariffs number? No one has posted any numbers.

Yep. All we have so far is that the percentage of imported products subject to tariffs, quotas and other protective measures increased.

That irks 'em.

Try to answer this question, you ditz: am I arguing that Reagan was a free-trader or a protectionist on this thread?

Pick one or the other.

Or think of it this way (too complex for you to understand, but I'll throw it out there anyway). By your standard, if Reagan was a protectionist because he placed tariffs on Japanese motorcycles, then what is he because he signed a free trade agreement with Canada?

Don’t forget, we know Reagan left office with a higher trade deficit than when he entered. That irked you so much you ignored it and hoped it would go away.

Toddsterpatriot asked Mojave for the average tariff applied; the typical tariff tax rate. Mojave - not knowing the answer, and apparently too insecure to state as much - answered a different question.

You know, you are looking like a real ass -- posting lie after lie and misrepresenting not only what was aked, but what was answered.

If you want to be taken at all seriously, why don't you clean up your act?

I did actually learn something on this thread, despite your arrogance. You could use a bit of intellectual honesty in your attempts to convince people. As it is, I wouldn't trust you to walk my dog.

Please see your post 509; I believe you are the only erroneously conflating a trade and budget deficit. The two are not the same thing.

Please point out where I lied; shouting "LIE!" does not suffice.

I know you have clarified your position after I discussed with you, and I have apologized for any insult and errors I may have made; how nice it would be for you and your fellow anti-free-traders on this thread to extend the same courtesy!

But please point out where I have lied. Failure to do so stains your own claimed intellectual purity and simply fades you to the shadows of irrelevancy.

If you want to be taken at all seriously, why don't you clean up your act?

Please point out where I was slanderous or insulting. And while you're at it, I am sure you equally condemn Mojave for his ungrounded and flat-out invectives hurled in just the last 100 posts.

I did actually learn something on this thread, despite your arrogance. You could use a bit of intellectual honesty in your attempts to convince people.

Again, the onus is on you to point it out; if I lied, I would like to be shown where, and I will gladly apologize and issue mea cuplus.

As it is, I wouldn't trust you to walk my dog.

Then I would not have to clean up after the fecal matter deposited, and leave that chore to yourself; both I and your dog would be in improved situations!

Why, he must be a hypocrite! ;)

The truth of the matter is as you and I and Toddsterpatriot know; that by words and most of his deeds, President Reagan was an unabashed free trade supporter. But he was also quite a pragmatic politician who understood the meaning of the word compromise, and often reached compromise regarding trade.

Reagan would gladly take 70-80% of what he wanted to give the other side their "pound of flesh", and he would continue fighting to get the rest. But thankfully he understood compromise and the nation was better for it.

I don't have a dog in that hunt, and I wouldn't trust my dog to walk anyone on this thread. Mojave could've easily said that he didn't know the answer to Toddsterpatriot's question and that would've been the end. But it took hours (or it certainly felt like it did). But Mojave is so intent on playing "gotcha'" that he fails to realize that his dissembling, in the end, makes him look like the idiot.

It's actually the one thing I've taken from interacting with him on this thread. He gets most upset about the stuff he does himself. He points out the obvious, and treats it like a rhetorical "victory." He argues with himself. And he runs like a child the moment he realizes he's about to appear inconsistent.

All said, your complaint about PugetSoundSoldier's behavior, while ignoring the same by Mojave makes your complaint worthless.

That’s not an answer. See, calcowgirl? You can’t even get a simple answer out of him.

But as surely as a dog returns to its vomit, you're ready to smear and misrepresent Ronald Reagan.

And for the record, madam, that IS an insulr and one that I would repeat again in the same circumstances.

Indignation over the sting of truth is the defense of the indefensible

Enjoy the pain of your own defense, madam.
