Where Will the Bikers Go Now?

Motorcyle Enthusiasts Turned Away From Popular Myrtle Beach Rally Spot: As the women at the SBB biker bar here greet the six o'clock hour by jiggling to a blaring version of Kid Rock's take on "Sweet Home Alabama," Bob Johnston leans back, flips his flip-flops off, and ponders the state of America's biker culture. The party inside the saloon notwithstanding, the news ain't good, he says. Just up the road, Myrtle Beach, S.C. -- the site for 68 years of the world's largest Harley-Davidson rally, drawing nearly half a million riders annually -- has effectively tried to shut down the event this year. Inside the city limits, a local helmet law and a ban on noisy tailpipes is likely to keep most riders at bay.

I dont know about the/any biker culture at present. But for me it is the ride not the destination, that is the reason to choose the bike experience.

I totally agree. When I ride out to Sturgis with family this summer, it will be the ride and the sites along the way that we go for, and we likely won’t stick around for much of the moral depravity in Sturgis before starting back on a new scenic route home.

This biker group is not the problem in Myrtle Beach. It is a money maker for the town. What they are really trying to shut down is the very large “Black Biker’s” group (that gathers there also) due to excessive crime, violence and generally depraved behavior.
They can’t stop one and not the other. It would be discrimination don’tcha know.

Thats very true.

The black bikers regularly trashed hotels and were a huge nuisance.

I’ve tried to be in MB during that time and its pretty bad.

But then, I don’t ride a bike and don’t understand why there even are bike rallies of thousands. When cars gather in thousands, we call them traffic jams.
:]

This is EXACTLY the problem. Two weeks after Myrtle Beach's "Bike Week" comes "Black Bike Week", which seems to generate a plethora newpaper articles about the attendees openly defecating and urinating in the streets.

Out of historical curiosity and always looking for ‘connections’ ... how long has this been going on?

For bikers, "it's all about trying to find some independence here in America," says William Dulaney, a consultant to National Geographic's upcoming "Outlaw Biker" series. "Why bikers don't like helmet laws and pipe laws, it's all about choice: If states came out and required bikers by law to ride without a helmet, they'd all wear one, it's that funny."

Oh BS. I know guys who can ride without helmets & wear them anyway. I know guys who hate them. I have had the chance to ride without & I would rather wear one, my hair gets too tangled up. As for pipe laws, I like loud pipes , it lets senior drivers know you are around them. They tend to want to run you over or off the road where I live.

I'm not sure exactly, but I know it has been going on since the early 1990s. Myrtle Beach's Bike Week has always been more of a Harley event whereas blacks, by and large, lean more toward non-Harley sport bikes.

I think my motorcycle days might be over.

I finally quit riding when I got a knee replacement and my surgeon told me, "Remember, if you drop your bike and twist your new knee, I'm going to have to cut it out of you." (However, friends have told me to forget the doctor's warning and to buy a trike.)

One article I was reading said it has been going on for the past 65 years...... So back in the 40s it seems was the beginning. Another article I saw said the bike week was moving to New Bern, NC. Who knows what they will do. It may take a year or two for a concensus to develope over where/when to hold the bike week.

I moved to Myrtle Beach in 1976 and lived there until 1987, running charter and commercial fishing boats out of Murrells Inlet and Georgetown. Back then it was a quiet and peaceful place to get away. In the winter the area absolutely died and we almost starved to death. Now I hardly ever go back, preferring the serenity of Western Kentucky when we can afford the occasional vacation.

You’re right, my parent’s live in Murrell’s Inlet, they shut the restaurants down there because they get ripped off. Lot’s of dine and dash and downright nasty behavior.
