Recipes on a Budget: Tomato Sauce
nassaunewslive ^ | 01 May 2009 09 | Patricia Kreiser

Have you noticed the price of a jar of tomato sauce? A 16-ounce jar of sauce can run you about $4 (unless you follow Nassau News Live’s “Food on a Budget," then you can find the best deals around!)

Don’t forget: you don’t have to spend the most money to get the best taste. Sometimes, your own recipes can taste even better than your favorite brands!

Whatever the case, you can make your own sauce in larger quantities at a fraction of the cost (and tomato sauce freezes well, so you don’t have to eat it by the half-ton). My mom makes her own sauce now, and it’s a treat to have fresh chicken Parmesan with homemade tomato sauce.

I’m going to share a basic sauce recipe with you. Adjust the recipe to your own tastes and enjoy the savings!

I actually like the Great Value (walmart) brand of sauce - I add a few seasonings but I have always bought Ragu, and their GV brand is pretty good.

Where's the best recipe for this? I am always looking for new recipes, especially the ones that start out with a stick of butter.

Is there a FReeper recipe PING list?

I couldn’t find it. Do a keyword search of, “Recipe,” and lots of goodies will show up.

Let’s hear it for the weiner! When I was small, times were really tough and we used to have weiner gravy for breakfast over homemade biscuits. Must have been okay - we’ve survived some 60+ more years but then, of course, my Mom knew what was in the weiner’s - not so today!

go to your local warehouse store and buy plain large #10 cans of spaghetti sauce.....

cook hamburger or sausage.. along with some chopped onions and garlic..add sauce....then some basil...oregano...FENNEL is a key ingredient...salt and pepper as needed....throw in some dehydrated or frozen green peppers from you garden last year.....

makes many servings...

Joe, Your recipe is very similiar to mine. I add a tablespoon, or so, of tomato paste after the carrots, onion, and garlic have sweated for a few minutes.

This is also a good use of leftover summer tomatoes that can’t be given away.

You could grow absolutely GORGEOUS tomatoes with an AeroGarden. I have one and I swear by it. I grew a kit of jalepons and tomatoes this winter and they were terrific. No bugs, no rot, just great juicy taste.
