CLEVELAND (AP) The sister of an Ohio soldier killed in Iraq was ticketed for speeding and missed a ceremony awarding him a posthumous Bronze Star and Purple Heart.
The ticket was issued by a state trooper to 25-yearold Rebecca Davis of Cuyahoga Heights along Interstate 77 on Thursday despite her request for a warning and to call and confirm her situation.
The ticket was withdrawn about three hours later when a State Highway Patrol lieutenant went to the funeral home and apologized. A relative of Davis, who is a police officer, had called to complain about the ticket.
She was ticketed heading to an award ceremony for 21-year-old Spc. Brad Davis of Garfield Heights, who was killed last week in a roadside bomb explosion in Iraq. Burial was planned for Friday
Agreed, Just like mystudents that are perpetually late for class, after enough detentions they all of a sudden magically ae able to get to class on time every time.
If the event was that important to her she would have been there half an hour early.
She’s the one who needs be apologize.
Because unlike cop haters, they're capable of civilized behavior.
Maybe you can't see this for what it is, but I can.
Cops give breaks to certain people all the time. The mistake this girl made was not bringing up the fact that she had a relative who is a cop.
Yes she was speeding but clearly the cop was being an arrogant jerk. Using discretion is part of being a cop. A good cop.
So you admit the cop was being uncivilized.
Probably because lots of cops are vets (it may come as a shock to some of us).
Backwards. Take a couple of deep breaths.
Cop haters don't need facts. They simply invent them as they go.
That must be universal, because I see it happen every day as well.
In the past 10 to 15 years, I've seen a shift in driving patterns. It is now women who are the more aggressive drivers, speeding, tailgating, making dangerous lane changes, etc.
It's not even a close call.
(Men do these things, too, but in lower numbers than women,)
Lets think about a few items before deciding to label the cop as an evil SOB:
#1 - Why was she speeding in the first place? Is it the cop’s fault she didn’t manage her time better, leave earlier for the event, and then have to speed to try to catch up?
#2 - IF she is speeding and it causes her to have an accident, killing someone - maybe even herself - was the accident any less tragic because she was speeding?
#3 - Regardless of how we feel about police and ticketing drivers - the cop was doing his job. There really are VERY few “legitimate” excuses for speeding. So I guess we are to pick and choose which laws we follow, and which we tell our children and grandchildren - it is ok to break them - they are stupid laws anyway. But we will sit back and criticize Juan McCain, and many in the current administration who say that illegal aliens have committed no crime.
#4 - telling a cop you are late for some ceremony or funeral would be an easy one to fake - do we want the police to not only be the police, but the judge too?
And I say all of the above having been a recipient of a fraudulent ticket when I was much younger - that was cheaper to pay than to fight (still wish I had the cash at the time to fight it).
“Shes the one who needs be apologize.”
Agree...I don’t care if she has an audience with the Pope, it’s not about her. Last week I had a car go by me at at least 90 MPH when I was going 40...in a 40 zone. Never saw it until I heard it going past me. If I had drifted lanes or swerved to avoid something, I would have been dead. Believe me, I REALLY wished that a pig had been around then.
I will say the majority still slows down.
The speeders like to weave back and forth as they zip past cars.
I’ve seen more than one crossing guard almost taken out as a speeder zips over to the right lane to get around just one more car.
Man, just depart a few minutes early and enjoy the drive.
Not Ohio State Troopers. They are trained that there are no exceptions. Everybody gets a ticket. There was a article in the paper a few years ago about the Governors wife getting a ticket. Even she could not talk her way out of a ticket.
Thats the way it should be, no selective enforcement.
All I got out of this story is the woman didn’t seem to want to put any extra time into the funeral of her brother and thinks because there is a cop in the family she should get special treatment, which she did.
I agree with that.
In our little city, they put up school zone signs that have three or four different time periods when the zone is in effect. Like:
7:45 am to 9:15 am
11:30 am to 1:15 pm
3:15pm to 4:30 pm
(or whatever)
How in the world does a driver have time to read all that, then look at a watch or clock to figure out if s/he has to slow down or not?
You know, I know it was ultimately her fault for being late, I don’t dispute that, but if you think it takes moments to get a ticket, with all that entails, you don’t have the least little idea what you’re talking about.
A warning ticket is one thing. A ticket could easily take 15-20 minutes.
Back in the 1980’s, I was the only one of my friends who was brave enough to drive the Ohio Turnpike when we went on a roadtrip. They’d tell me stories about getting pulled over for doing 60 in a 55.
My pet peeve is "No Turn On Red (when pedestrians are present)" signs. Does that mean if a pedestrian is standing kitty-corner to my car, and 75' away, I can't turn? I do not, being a "words mean things" sort of guy, but it ticks off the people behind me to no end.
And if it ever turns into a throw-down it will all be because of a stupid sign that 50% of people haven't seen or read.
