Russian army scraps new uniforms

A plan to replace Soviet-era Russian military uniforms with ones by a leading fashion designer has been abandoned because of a lack of money. The plan to bring in the new uniforms, designed by Valentin Yudashkin, was supported by Russian PM Vladimir Putin. There is now only enough money to pay for uniforms for soldiers taking part in the forthcoming Victory Day parade. Everyone else, it seems, will remain in the rather drab olive shades Russia inherited from the former Soviet Union.

'Less frumpy' On Friday, Senator Viktor Ozerov, chairman of Russian Federation Council committee on defence and security, told the radio station Ekho Moskvy that the army knew what to spend money on - and that new uniforms were not a priority. Valentin Yudashkin shows off his uniform designs (23 April 2008) Valentin Yudashkin's designs built on the uniforms of imperial Russia "I think that the uniforms which servicemen now wear make it possible to distinguish them from civilians," he said. The new designs for the army uniforms come from Russia's leading fashion designer, Valentin Yudashkin.

Providence has dealt us a card which Obama refuses to play. In fact he's betting against his own hand. The reduced petroleum prices have utterly devastated the Russian and the Venezuelan economies and presumably dramatically restricted the mischief they can do. If, as this article reports, the Russians cannot even fund new uniforms, their international ambitions must be reduced.

Obama has done everything he can to eventually restore high petroleum prices to the benefit of the Russians, the Venezuelans, and the Gulf states which indirectly fund terrorists. He has done this with an utterly unrealistic policy to move America away from the internal combustion engine to windmills. One cannot resist the temptation to play with the words: this is quixotic.

What should he be doing instead? He should be encouraging domestic and offshore drilling wherever economically feasible in this environment. He should be advancing the production of atomic energy by streamlining regulation, and acknowledging that no policy which pretends to have a concern for climate change can be a serious policy if it ignores atomic energy.

He should, of course, abandon his mindless cap and trade proposals and remove the government and its intrusions from a free energy market. Of course, Obama will never do that because this is his backdoor into socialism-not that he needs a backdoor having boldly marched through the front door in taking over much of the banks, the automobile industry, the finance industry, and the insurance industry.

The rule of thumb: Those with the prettiest uniforms lose the war.

Recall how fabulous those Nazi uniforms are in all the movies? Who can forget the picture of Lee in his finest gold braid surrendering to Grant in his private’s uniform with General shoulder straps dirt? how about the Redcoats surrendering to General Washington at Yorktown?

The Soviet uniforms will remain....

And, Budget cuts are NOT the real reason for this.

However, the Russians have taken real heat from the West for having massive Soviet displays during the WWII celebrations, and have toned these back in recent years because of the criticism. They have even talked about scrapping the celebration because of it.

You might have a point there. They say about the British army that it loses all its battles except the last one and I think their uniforms are pretty frumpy-except for parade costumes.

However, I take issue with your analysis of Confederate uniforms. The Confederates were so poor that half of them were wearing captured Yankee uniforms. The idea of Confederate gray is largely a misnomer, many of them had butternut as a result of home weaving. General Lee put on his best uniform which he rarely wore to maintain the dignity of his army while he alone underwent the indignity of the surrender, an unavoidable but honorable act forced upon them by circumstance which all the efforts of duty and honor could not avoid. Upon learning that he was surrounded with no hope of reinforcements, that his military situation was hopeless, Lee remarked, "Then there is nothing for it but I must go to General Grant and surrender and I would rather die a thousand deaths." With that action he performed his last duty as a soldier and picked up his duties as a citizen of the Federal Republic which he served faithfully until his death.

When Lee had to abandon his baggage, he picked out his best uniform, sacrificing the others to the G-ds of Battle. Meanwhile Grant rode all night through muck and mire, driving his men to cut off Lee’s army before they could escape to the mountains.

Lee did not go alone, but rather, took his staff. A good thing too, as none of Grant’s staff had the office supplies needed to document the offer of surrender and its acceptance.

And the Union generals forbad celebrations which would rub salt into the wounds of the rebels, since after all, they were our countrymen again.

Yes he took a staff, I think of two, but he did not take an entourage. Rather, he took responsibility.

Equally, he took responsibility in declining his subordinates suggestion to filter his men out through Yankee lines to begin to wage a guerilla. I have described this in my about page to emphasize the moral character of the man about whom I often assert, "the noblest and sublimest American of them all." When we came out of the McLean house having executed the articles of surrender as he waited for Traveler to be brought to him he was alone as he clapped his hands together and exclaimed, "too bad, too bad, oh too bad." None of these actions were consistent with a vainglorious, splendidly uniformed commander.
