Congress imposed a ban on what it called assault weapons in 1994, outlawing the sale and importation of 19 military-style weapons, copycat models with similar features, and high-capacity ammunition magazines. In a compromise with Republicans, the Democrats who controlled Congress agreed to let it expire in ten years unless it was renewed. By 2004, with Republicans in charge, support had evaporated.
.Question on president
Yes. We had the ban for 10 years. He should use up whatever political capital is necessary to reinstate the ban.
No. It was a mistake the first time around and it would be a mistake again. Existing gun laws are enough.
Maybe. Owning a gun is a right, but I'm conflicted as to whether or not average Americans should be able to own assault weapons.

Doesn't seem to be working.
The skewed attitudes in Washington are going to elicit a skewed response from the citizenry. Perhaps that will be skewered.

I would bet a dollar that every idiot voting yes has no clue what the legal definition of “assault rifle” is.

The whole idea of doing away with the right of gun ownership by law-abiding citizens is an absolutely scary idea. Can’t you just see all the criminals hi-fiving each other as they brandish their guns in a defenseless society?
If someone wants to kill you with a cast iron pan or a sharp stick, they will find a way. It’s not the weapon; it’s the will.
And, just because you don’t want to kill them doesn’t mean they won’t kill you—out of desire, ideology, or, worst of all, habit.
Finally, as we know here, good guys have weapons legally. The others will get them somehow and absolutely will not care at all what the good guys think. I don’t think we want to be serfs here. I hope we also don’t intend to die on our knees.
Ping Ya’ll...
The real weapon is your own mind.
“whether or not average Americans should be able to own assault weapons.”
Pray tell, what is an assault weapon? What makes them so much more lethal than a common 30/06 hunting rifle with a scope? Which one would you rather face?
I’d rather face an assault weapon (tanks,ect...) , than a 30.06 with a scope.
Absolutely, true "assault weapons" are made to hurt REALLY bad, but optimally not kill. A wounded enemy takes 2 or 3 out of the fight, a dead one just takes one.
An M16 is an assault weapon then?We were told they were intended to incapacitate the enemy , not kill them.
Maybe that was for the drafted “Flower Children” , who knows.
I don’t believe the “average American” can lawfully purchase an M16, so it wouldn’t apply to the current argument. If I’m wrong please correct me:)
Should President Obama push to permanently reinstate a ban on assault weapons?
