A manhunt is on in Athens for a University of Georgia professor accused of shooting and killing three people.
Police are looking for George M. Zinkhan III, a professor in the Department of Marketing and Distribution.
George M. Zinkhan
Two blocks were secured in Athens after the shootings. He is a 57-year-old white male, last seen wearing a polo shirt and blue shorts, according to the UGA web site. He may be traveling in a red car.
The shooting happened late this morning at or near the Athens Community Theatre off Prince Avenue near downtown. Clarke County coroner Sonny Wilson confirmed the deaths, but did not know the ages or gender of the victims.
A man outside the shooting scene said his son was a witness to the slayings.
John Hardy of Conyers said his son, Matt Hardy, was standing next to one of the victims. John Hardy says his son told him that the victim, Tom Tanner, was shot twice once in the front and the back.
John Hardy said Matt Hardy, who lives in Athens, was a friend of Tanners. His son was being questioned by Athens police as of 3:15.
At 22 youre not supposed to watch people die, said John Hardy.
Around 3:30 p.m., Matt Hardy left the scene with his parents. He declined to comment on what he told investigators.
The University of Georgia sent a text alert to students saying that a UGA professor is a suspect in an off-campus shooting in the Prince Avenue area.
UGA Alerts, which began after the Virginia Tech killings in March 2007, are used to let more than 25,000 know quickly when there are possible dangerous situations, said Pete Konenkamp, university spokesman.
There has been no indication that Zinkhan has returned to campus, Konenkamp said.
Zinkhan, who earned a doctorate from the University of Michigan in 1981, came to UGA in spring 1994 from the University of Houston.
UGA President Michael Adams released the following statement:
The University community is shocked and saddened at this tragic event. Our first thoughts are for safety of the university community and for prompt apprehension of the person responsible. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of all those who have been affected.
Bedwetting flagburners lump all Christians with Abortion Clinic Bombers, I’m lumping all college professors with murderers.
ZOMG I SAW HIM TODAY!
“It’s good to be the King.”
Oh, okay. You made it up.
Cool.
I thought you had something like that “gaydar” they used to joke about on Saturday Night Live.
What ever happened to “You get an ‘F’”?
I think he killed his wife, who is an attorney and also works with
town and gown theater. Killed another attorney and UGA staffer.
His two young children were there. And they think he is driving
a red jeep liberty renegade. And his wife may be a divorce attorney.
Earlier in the day, he was so gay...then came the anger...
The professor got his B.A. from Swarthmore College. Blame the Quaker influence?
That was what I thought of too when I saw his picture.
To be fair, Athens has a very highly disproportionate amount of red cars. Go Dawgs!
Thanks for your comment. I left a good career to go back for the PhD and obtain my dream of becoming a professor. It was hard work but I completed the PhD and got a tenure track job on the first try.
Most people have no idea that professorships are national job searches. In some fields 200-400 people apply for every job. The competition can be intense and then when you get a job, your day doesn’t end at 5 o’clock or just because it’s a holiday or weekend. I’m not complaining; I choose the work, I’m just saying that most people have no idea what is involved in a PhD or becoming a professor.
I drive an SUV. I’m not a commie or socialist and work hard for myself and my students. I am the only conservative in my dept and I catch ‘good-natured’ (whose opinion?) flack about it all the time, but I try to fight the good fight. People have issues with black conservatives, as if I cause too much cognitive dissonance in their little minds. Unlike the libs, I try to keep politics out of my classroom - except when I’ve had to defend McCain as a disabled war hero, or the ‘evils’ of capitalism, or the fact that not everyone who is against same sex marriage or abortion is a knuckle-dragging moron.
I know FReepers like to make jibes at lawyers (used to be one), professors, school teachers, doctors, and just about anyone else in the professions, but it gets tiring sometimes.
Yes, clearly a Quaker crime of violence. :) But, you know, whenever an estranged wife or a divorced wife, especially with kids, is involved and other men are involved, we need, more than ever, to know the motive, to know the back story to that violence.
Ridiculous.
Hear, hear....not all of my professors were liberals, and the ones that were were easily discredited. Sometimes the willfully uneducated have a problem with those who actually went to college.
